Donor Insemination - help

Post by juliat72 »

My husband is infertile (confirmed by tests a while ago) and we are just starting to investigate donor insemination and really just wondered if anyone had any advise for us?

Hi Julia

I am in a similar situation as yourself, we have had male factor for a while now and our worst fears were confirmed with a biopsy last month which found no sperm.

I am waiting for AF before starting DIUI.

The only real advice I can give you is to firstly be really happy with the clinic you are at and keep as healthy as possible to give yourself the best chance................most importantly keep positive!

Don't know if I have answered your question.......if I haven't there are lots of wonderful people on this notice board who can help to.

If there is anything specific you want to know.....just ask!

When are you starting IUI?

Good Luck

Hi there,

I have a daughter by DIUI and have been trying for a while to conceive a sibling and hope to be starting another cycle of DIUI soon. Its a very simple procedure and I have always found it to be totally painless. As Jen said, please feel free to ask any questions you might have, there is always someone here who can help!

I haven't been in touch with a clinic or anything so I'm not starting anything yet. I don't even know what your abbreviatiossn mean! AF, DIUI ???

Do I have to have any tests or do you just go to a private clinic and they do the insemination?

How much does it cost?

Hi, re the abbreviations, check the glossary on the left hand side of the screen. It has most things :) and I find it really helpful.

Good luck,
Debra.

The glossary just explains terms not what initials stand for like AF & DIUI

Julia - we too have very severe male factor (caused by mumps) - we too will probbaly have to used (DI or DIUI both terms mean Donor insemination). All I would say is take your time to decide - because its a massive call. Altho I have to say we have been talking about it for 18months - I sometimes feel like we are no further on! I think at the end of the day - if you want a baby and its the only way then...why over analyse it

there are books tho - do to amazon there are a few there - there one call Gift of the Stock which I found helpful and DI Lethal Secrets. The are all proponents of being very open - which I'm not so sure about (at all!) but nevertheless they do provoke some quite interesting thoughts which if you are a bit new to the whole subject you might find helpful. Also - and MOST importantly they make you realise that youa re SO not alone. Thousands or children are born every year through donor eggs or sperm. Bear in mind that a very small % of people ever even tell these children that they are froma donor gamete

One other thing - there is likely to be a change in teh law next year - whereby all donor will no longer be anonomous. ie when your child is 18 he/ she can find the name of the person who donated sperm. Whatever your views are about this...it does mean that there is going to be a severe shortage of sperm donors out there . So keep you expectation quite low with regard to the choice you will be offered.

MOST important -is keep talking to us lot. We have a DI thread that I have found a real lifeline (especially if its a subject that you dont necessarily want to share with the outside worl)
Good luck with everything

ps - in terms of treatment - if you are fine - I think its literally a very straightforward insemination procedure. Altho I think some clinics do it more than once per cycle and some clinics may stimulate you with drugs to make you ovulate. (these are basically fine)

Thanks Caz. His is due to mumps as well.

We have been talking it over since we got married 5 years ago and now seems a good time to start trying as we are financially secure but don't want to leave it much longer as he is 43 and I'm 32.

How much does it cost?

Depends where you go I guess and if youa re doing it privately or not. I think privately its not a huge amount (a few hundred pounds) - we are doing ICSI (a kind of IVF) which makes it many thousands of pounds - but straight DIUI is simpler and much cheaper
Dont be afraid to call clinics and ask for a price list. If you need to find a clinic - go to the HFEA website - they will list clinic with their success rates.

ps- may I ask - when did you find out that yr DH could have kids - how was/ is he with it all?

He actually found out with his 2nd wife (I'm number three!) and I knew right from the beginning of our relationship. It is only now that we have a secure business and a bigger house that we want to try for a baby. He's fine about the whole thing and I'd say wants this more than I do.

Hi Juliat,

Sounds like you and your husband are very clear about what you want which is great!

I am just changing clinics, only to one more locally but I was previously at UCH in London and the cost of donor IUI there came to about £900. That included the insemination procedure, the cost of the drugs (if you are having superovulation only of course) and the donor sperm which is a separate charge. In the local clinic, its around the same sort of price but I am sure they vary if you shop around. I'm sure we could get this cheaper but we have to take into account travelling so there's not really that much choice, so it really depends on where you are and where you are prepared to travel to.

Have a good look around before you make your mind up.

I got a quote (sounds daft) a while ago from a clinic in London and they said it was £2000!! I'm ringing the Southampton one tomorrow so we'll see what they say.

hi girls

I have had 3 goes at icsi with hb sperm and one go at ivf with donor sperm, i did not get pg.

Just before xmas I had a go at di and found it was so much easier than ivf, I just had to wee on a stick and when I ovulated I went in and had the sperm put in. I did not get pg and I'm having another go this month. We can have 6 goes at this and it cost's £375.00 per go. Diui is different as you take a small amount of druugs to increase egg production then they give you a injection to release the eggs and you go in 36 hours later to have sperm injected in. You have an increased change of twins and the success rate is higher but it cost about £950.00 per cycle.

well hope I have answered some of your questions, good luck with what ever you decide.

Thanks for that. Doesn't seem that it's as expensive as I first thought it might be - I was thinking it would be £2000 a time!
