I (25) am new here and totally new to this concept. 6 weeks ago my husband (27) started having severe back pain, through all the hypothesized diagnoses and now 6 weeks later he has been diagnosed with testicualr cancer and had his left testicle removed. We have asked docs all along the way about fertility and they continued dismissing it and saying "I THINK it SHOULD be OK." Finally someone took us seriously and we have gone to a ART specialist.
After the initial sperm donation and analysis it's not great. They said we have enough now for 10 rounds of IVF, and if we do a second maybe enough for IUI. However all his numbers were poor (3 mil/mL, 37% motility, 0% norm morph). The biggest problem is he is supposed to start chemo monday (after second donation). Talk about a rock and a hard place.
I am in graduate school which is very demanding so there is no possibility of getting things going until April or May without me dropping out of school, so I guess we can only worry between now and then.
Who would have thought a 25 year old nurse would be making decisions about the life of her husband and future children...

Dear Meg,
I am sorry to hear of your dh's illness. Infertility is a difficult enough situation without the added pain and stress of dh going through chemo. I hope everything goes well for him. As for you, you are so young, so if dh #s are the only issue, you should have a very great chance of pregnancy on your 1st go.
I am in Grad school myself, and being 39 (40 next month) I needed to get things going regardless of the school thing, and am due in 5 wks( and still in school). We started our cycle January 12th( during the winter break), and 1st time was a charm!!!! that being said, I did end up having my ER (egg retrieval) & ET (embryo transfer) the 1st week of school as I was a slow starter, but no matter!
during your "stimming" regimen, you will need to see your REs often, say every other or 3rd day so they can check your progress, so plan on doing that over a holiday (like winter break, spring break) then you can focus on what is a very emotionally grueling time without the stress of the classroom
in any case, best of luck to you and DH- we'll be rooting for you!

Thanks yall, your encouragement helps more than you know. I am actually in Nurse Anesthesia Graduate School so I am in my clinical roations where I get 2 weeks of vacation to take between now and October 2009 (yeah fun stuff). I hope that we will be able to start IVF in the spring so if we get lucky and get pregnant I won't deliver until I get out of school.

And new update, DH started chemo today after getting results back from a second sperm donation this morning, it was similar to the first (same count, less volume but better motility). We have several vials frozed for IVF and they said we could try IUI once or twice if we wanted, but with his #'s would only have ~ 7% success... I think we are going to use less of our (now very valuable) sperm and shoot for the higher % with IVF with ICSI.

If it counts
Well, I am a 31 year old with a decent career but I would say that if biological children are important to you I would stop one semester of school and try to have children. You may not be able to later and you will regret it possibly. You can't ever go back...its my opinion, if it counts.
