Has anyone else seen the article in the current edition? It is possibly the worst piece of scaremongering, tabloidesque crap about ivf that I have ever read.
Obviously there are risks with ivf, but to link it to cancer, without medical evidence is plain irresponsible.
The main feature is about a woman who died after treatment. She had ohss, but developed a bowel problem which went undiagnosed - she actually died from this not ohss.
There are numerous other inaccuracies in the article. For example it states that the NICE report recommends 6 free cycles - which may take money away from essential services. This isn't true, it suggested up to 3 cycles, with up to 3 fets if you have any frozen embyro. Most couples will not need this number, or will choose not to have them.
It can't even the the abbreviation for OHSS right, referring it as OHS - wonder how much time they spent on research?
Obviously there are risks with ivf, as there are with any medical treatment, but there are better ways to discuss them than in an article such as this.
Anyway, I'll be writing to the editor and have also contacted Child. I may also contact the press complaints commission.
An article such as this is exactly what you (and your family) don't need to read during an already stressful time.
I haven't read the article but may go and buy the mag now. Well done for writing in and complaining. Perhaps if we all wrote a brief letter they would get the message that they should research properly, which isn't hard! This sort of thing gives so many people the wrong idea about IVF and may put people off even trying. Shame on Real.
I haven't read the article yet but will do. There are always people doing 'pieces' on IVF or ICSI and they THINK they know what they are talking about when in actual fact they know sweet FA about it Their research is very limited and they pump out stats that just dont ring true. I remember reading an article some years ago after I had had OHSS and it was all bollox. They should get real people like us to write articles for them, at least we know what we are talking about!
I must get off my soap box now as I could go on forever. You should print off this thread once you have more replies and send that to the magazine along with your letter.
Hi guys,my friend pointed out the article to me whilst away last week on a trip.
She has no idea that I am having treatment at present and I must admit as i read it the old negative vibes did set in!
However it was so poorly written and full of complete garbage that I soon tossed it aside. I reckon whoever wrote it must have spent about 2 minutes on research made apparant by the very basic mistake relating to OHHS or OHS as they refer to it!!!!
I actually thought the rest of the magazine was fairly poor and shall not be reading it again!!!!
magnus
I read the article, and as sad it is for those who have lost loved ones I do feel the reporter/s of this story really should have researched more, I am sure everyone is well aware that there are risks to ANY kind of treatment we undergo in life and in the very extreme someone may have a bad reaction.
Although I am not having treatment as yet I know from talking to others and watching and taking notes of reports IVF does have pitfalls, but it is something I am aware of and something that I will most probably go for to give me the chance of having a baby of my own as it is the only way I can. And with that I understand there are risks which could be life threatening. I think that if I did not already know about these risks I probably would have been scared stiff of looking into IVF, unfortunately many people in this country have cancer and Real failed to mention the percentage of women who have had/having IVF/fertility treatment who have Cancer.
I think I will write into it just isn't fair to scare and upset people who as Tessie mentioned are already going through a stressful time.
Here Here i agree with you all i didnt read the article but totally agree if people are going to write about ivf and icsi then they really should know what they are talking about and talk to the couples that are experiancing it and get the real side of of ivf and icsi
