Post-transfer question

Post by RSC »

Why do they make us do bedrest for 48 hours post-transfer? I'm okay with doing it, but would like to understand the physical reason behind it!

Because those embryos have to stick to the uterine lining for implantation. If not they will just be floating around and you will not become pregnant. The more relaxed you are, the easier it is for implantation to occur. I'm on the couch for day 2.

Thanks. Does it matter how I lie?? I know I'm paranoid, but I'm worried that they'll float up my tubes and I'll get another ectopic!

The first day I put a couple of pillows under my legs. Day 2, I'm just lying on the couch. Chilling!

It's an old habit among clinics.

Study after study has shown no benefit in bedrest.
Avoid IVF and surrogacy in Ukraine. Ukrainian centers pay shills to post here under numerous sock accounts pretending to be patients in Ukraine. Centers using such deceptive advertising cannot be trusted and should be avoided.

I got pregnant from my first ivf at age 38 and went running the day after transfer. I worked out the whole 2 ww. I don't buy the whole bedrest thing either. I also reviewed research and my ap said that it doesn't make a difference either. I would think if it's a good embie and suppose to implant that it would...just my experience.

I don't buy the bedrest argument either. Millions of women get pregnant every year without going on bedrest. Most of us IVFers have trouble with either initial embryo creation or implantation and bedrest doesn't address either of those issues. There's no medium inside the uterus for the embryos to float around in - they stick to the endometrium and they either implant or they don't and get expelled with AF.

Still, I say if it makes you comfortable and keeps you from stressing, do the bedrest.

My RE just recommended taking it easy the day of and day after transfer. No bedrest. I was going to a family reunion and they just recommended staying cool and not standing too long. I agree with PP regular people get PG all the time with no bed rest. Though if it does make you feel better and less stressful then go ahead a do it.

It's an extra precaution. Sure, millions of women get pregnant, and smoke, drink, run, etc, not knowing they are pregnant. But, who knows how many of them have early miscarriages and they just don't realize it. Plus they are also not forking out thousands and thousands of dollars to get pregnant through IVF, not to mention the emotional expense.

I am all to willing to take the extra precaution and to do everything I can to improve their chances of implanting. Doctors orders!

I just did my transfer last Thurs and laid around the rest of that afternoon until Sat am. I was up and about Sat am because I had to take my husband to the airport, but I got right back on the couch, and just laid around, watched TV and pared down my stack of magazines.

I was told to not get my heart rate above 140, which is actually easy for me to do, as I am pretty well conditioned from being a runner. I am not going to run at all through a pregnancy. I am all too happy to walk. I can wait 10 months to run again.

Why take the risk? I supposed if you are loaded, your insurance covers IVf and all the meds, and you are willing to take the chance on having to go through this process again (and possibly again), you might take the chance.

Not me!

Taking it easy...

If it were a "risk" then all cllnics would still advocate it. They do not. There have even been studies that say bedrest harms chances of implantation due to decreased circulation. Most studies show there is statistically no difference in pregnancy rates with or without it, just as our expert Ghost says.

And I'm sorry, but comparing smoking and drinking while pregnant to not lying around on your butt for 2 days is ridiculous. I take personal offense at the implication that my behavior was risky when I too followed my doctor's orders. And you know what? I'm pregnant!

Again, it's all what you're comfortable with, and of course you need to excercise common sense! Don't run a marathon or go scuba diving the day after transfer (or at all during your 2ww). I've not done any bedrest and I have a 50% success rate across my 4 cycles, and I'm fairly certain that my failures had far more to do with poor embryo quality than they did lack of bedrest.

Just pointing out behaviors that some doctors view as "risky". Obviously smoking is at the top of the list.

Not directing any comments toward any particular person(s), which is why I stuck to generalities and my own personal opinion.

Women can make up their own mind. I am just following my doctor's orders.
