Question regarding formula

Hi all,

I have a question regarding formula. My son is currently on breast milk and formula. The 8oz. bottle of Similac says to refrigerate after opening and to use up in a 24 period. My question is how does one warm it up after it's been in the refrigerator? I use the playtex drop-ins.

Will the milk spoil if the remaining is capped in the same bottle?

Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

i am not familiar with that particular brand of formula. I used to make up formula from a pwder that you added water to and just made as much as i needed for each feed. I f you are refrigerating it i would have thought that you could heat it in exactly the same way you heat cows milk. Either microwave or put the milk in it's bottle then pop into hot water or heat the milk directly in a saucepan.

Karen, I read in several articles that heating in the microwave is not recommended because it can heat unevenly and cause burns. What is normally recommended is to place the bottle inside a pan with hot water and heat it up that way (always check it anyway in your forearm before giving to the baby).

You could put what you need into a bottle and stick the bottle into a mini crock pot with hot water...be careful, though, it'll warm quickly.

That said, I have resorted to the microwave...I put the bottle in (bottle only, no nipple or inserts), take it out, shake it, test it, then put it back in for the length of time needed...ie: 5 seconds, etc. It's a process, but it works...

If you use the microwave, you may need to use a bowl to heat the formula up..then put in the drop ins...

I have been told many times over by many nurses and doctors and books that a microwave is never safe. Only use the stove or a bottle warmer. Or, if it is not too cold you can put it in a warm glass of water to heat it up. I make formula ahead of time (twins) and refrigerate it. I use a bottle warmer to warm it up. I would spend way too much time making bottles if I did it every feed. That said, formula only lasts 24 hours is correct (after it is made). As for the bottle (similac) that are pre-made liquid, they are only good for one use. If the baby drinks from that bottle and does not drink it all, throw it away. If you put the liquid in 2 separate bottles then that is fine...24 hour rule. Hope that helps.
