Does anyone know the best way to sell leftover, unopened and unexpired IVF meds? I have Menopur, Follistim, Vivelle and Endometrin. I also have about 10 sealed pregnancy test kits and about 20 sealed ovulation test kits. I would hate for them to go to waste and I really, really could use the money since I had to pay out of pocket for my IVF.
The ovulation and pregnancy kits can be donated to a local free clininc in your area and you can deduct the cost of the kits from your taxes as a charitable donation. (Just get a receipt.)
We are also going to try to claim the IVF costs as a medical expense on our taxes to recoup some of the $$$. If you have or know an accountant, it might be worth your time to talk with them about what you can and can't claim.
I agree that donating the meds to a friend or your clinic is a better idea than trying to sell them. (Too many liabilities!)
If you paid for all the meds you can deduct them as a charitable donation if you do donate them. In order to deduct medical expenses you have to spend more than a certain percentage of your total income. I think it is 10%. So the first 10% of medical expenses are not tax deductible, anything over that is.
If your medical insurance paid for the meds, even if you donate them you can't deduct them, since you didn't pay for the original expenses.
We donated ours back to our clinic. They donate them to people who need them with cancer that cannot afford them. If you spend over 7% of you total gross income you can write off everything over that percent that you spent on medical stuff.
