Is she blowing smoke up my bum?

Post by Fluffypuppygal »

For the past two days, I have been working like a mule at my job. (I do 12-hour shifts in an ER, and we are hitting pneumonia season so a lot of elderly are coming down sick and a lot of people are falling down.)
Yesterday afternoon, I started to get a slight discoloration discharge that was light tan, and became darker and darker to a noticable brown tone.
The amount of discharge wasn't increasing (just a tiny bit of discharge), just the color tone. No cramps or other symptoms.
I was concerned and called my RE. She said that maybe I was working to hard, and to monitor things, and that the discoloration might be my cervix being irriated by all the running around I have to do, and to not panic yet.

I finished my shift, went home, went to bed and things did seem to stop, but then this morning, I had a larger smear of old brown blood (definite spotting size) but then only miniscule traces since then this morning. (It has been about an hour.) No fresh red blood at all, and no clots.
Is my RE right and I am just working too hard, or is she blowing smoke up my butt, and this is the beginning of the end of this pregnancy?
Any ideas ladies?

Well, we are now 15 hours into the day and I thought I had things under control. The tan discharge had tricked off to next to nothing. Now I just went to the bathroom and I am spotting pink blood. I called my RE and have an appontment for tomorrow at 9am.

Hi Fluffy,

I wish you the best of luck tomorrow morning -
I truly hope that being on your feet was the cause of the spotting. Do you have any time to relax and keep your feet up?
Taking some time to sit back and relax might do you body well.

Good luck,
Lauren

How far along are you? I have had brown-ish pink a couple of times and everything turned out to be okay. Good luck and try to relax.

Hi guys!
Thank you so much for the support! I really appreciate it!
The exam went good. As far as the doctor can tell, the baby, baby heart, and sac all look good and are doing what they are supposed to at 4 weeks. Luckily, I haven't seen the pink again since I last posted, but I am still having the small tan discharge. They are thinking that maybe it is my cervix being irritated. I do have a known polyp on it, and maybe with the extra blood going to the cervix and the extra activity, I am causing "cervicitis." (Has anyone heard of this?)
I'm getting a follow-up appointment in two weeks. Keep you fingers crossed!

Here you go. This is from one of many sites that say basically the same thing.

During pregnancy, your body is focused on nurturing your baby so your brain sends signals to your uterus not to menstruate. Most of the time, light bleeding during pregnancy is normal and doesn't present a danger to you or your baby. However, there are some risks associated with bleeding, especially in later stages of pregnancy. If you are pregnant, it is important to be aware of the factors that can cause bleeding, and the symptoms to watch out for.

Bleeding During Early Pregnancy
Bleeding during early pregnancy is fairly common, with about 1 in 4 women experiencing symptoms during their first trimester. If you are early in your pregnancy and have noticed some vaginal bleeding, you may think you have gotten your period. This blood is not your period, but, in fact, is due to some other cause.

Some women will notice light bleeding about 10 to 14 days after fertilization. This is called implantation bleeding, and is caused by the egg implanting itself in your uterus. As the egg finds a home for itself in your uterus, it may disrupt the lining just a little bit, causing light bleeding. This bleeding should only last a couple of days and be fairly light. Implantation bleeding is nothing to worry about, but if it gets heavy at any time, or continues longer than a couple of days, see a doctor.

Should You Worry?
During early pregnancy, your cervix changes in order to accommodate your new baby. Your body will provide increased blood flow to your cervix, and sometimes this can result in light bleeding. If your cervix is inflamed slightly during intercourse or a pelvic exam, spotting or bleeding may occur. Again, this is normal and does not necessarily mean that your baby is in any trouble. If your bleeding is abnormally heavy or lingers for more than a few days, visit with your doctor to determine the cause.

Thanks for the information!
I'm hoping this is all there is. Luckily, (at least for now) things have settled down and pretty much gone away. My ultrasound is this coming Friday, so I will have more news then.
I wish there were more reassuring sites when it comes to spotting and pregnancy. When you Google "spotting" and "pregnancy" together, you get about 5,000 site hits on miscarraige. Not exactly what you want to see when you are already anxious!
I wonder if anyone has done any kind of study on pregnancy and spotting? I would love some real statistical data, as the numbers I get from websites are all over the board. Also why some women spot and some don't.
Just curious....

Try to relax. It really is very common in early pregnancy. I had it with my son. Yes, i was scared but my doc told me it was very common and not to worry unless other symptoms developed. Please try to put it out of your mind and enjoy the fact that you will soon be a mommy.
