Early in cycle, but only 2 follicles

Post by sammycat »

Hi
This is my first IVF cycle. I'm 39 years old. I just returned from my 2nd ultrasound after 4 days of stim drugs and I only have 2 follicles :( My protocol thus far has been 5 U Lupron, 200 Follistem, 75 U Menopur. Today my RE increased the Follistem to 300, is this enough? Anyone else out there that has had only a follicle or two at the beginning of the cycle and ended up with a good outcome?

Anyone out there with any thoughts? I'm so desperate for info! Is it too early to consider canceling this cycle?

sammycat - I have heard of several ladies on the board that when they upped the stimming drugs that they produced more follicles. When is your next u/s, b/w? Sending tons of follicle growing vibes.

Sammy....I was on 300 Follistim, 5 Lupron and 10 Menopur, twice a day each...and I had made only 4 follicles. Then 2 of them stopped responding. I continued with the meds. 1 more follicle stopped responding. I was left with one. My RE was surprised because he said he hit me with a high dose of all the stim meds and that I was a low responder for sure.....he said that its hard with only one follicle, because not every follicle even has an egg. The thought of cancelling crossed my mind but my husband said not to. To make a long story short, today I had my ultrasound and saw my baby's heartbeat for the very first time at 6w4d.....one follicle, one egg, one embryo, one pregnancy.... Whether you cancel or not is up to you, but just wanted to encourage you and let you know that it can happen..... :D baby dust and God Bless.

Heisable, I remember at my protocle class, they said they would cancel the retrieval if the follicles are less than four. I thought it depends on the doc, not us, since they have to explain to the insurance company. Or, I misunderstood?

I wouldn't worry too uch about until your further in and things still look like this. during my last 2 cycles only my right ovary was responding well, this last one that we did just this past july the left one cought up last in the stimulation and we where able to get 15 eggs. But the one before this the right one did most of the work. And we still ended up with 9 eggs.
My point is is that you may be fine from here on in. It's only been four days and of course your nervous about things not being optimal. But you also have to remember that the RE isn't sure how you respond just yet so they have to tweek you a little to get the best response. I know it's hard, but try to relax until your a little further in and trust that you'll do fine.
Good luck!!
