Worried in italy

Post by Annie »

Hello everyone,
I was hoping someone could help with the following
My friends sister is in the middle of her first ivf cycle and is in italy. she has been in quite a lot of pain since the egg collection and has had 2 embryos transferred this morning. Has anyone else experienced similar symptoms? To complicate things the clinic dont seem to comunicate very well with her ( her husband is Italian so its not a language thing) . She is worried that she might be overstimulated but they didnt tell her how many follicles she produced and simply said to ring if she wasnt urinating properly.
I was at a loss to advise as my memories of my first cycle six years ago, when i overstimulated are too vague( i do remember being v swollen and achey) and I did my treatments in England. I ended up having a freeze all to avoid OHSS. So im hoping the fact they let her continue to implant means that overstimulations not an issue.Apparently in italy they dont freeze embryos and any made have to be implanted. I presume that is unless it would endanger the mother?? Could her pain indicate anything else? Does anyone have any experience of the Italian system? Any advice would be very helpful as Im at a loss.
Good luck with all your cycles
Thanks Annabel

hi annable

unfortunately i am not familiar with the italian system but am certainly familiar with OHSS. what kinds of pains is she getting? obviously most people are sore after egg collection anyway but if the pain is extreme, she feels nauseous, is extremely swollen and/or cant breathe then i would say its definitely OHSS. the other thing is that if she was ok after egg collection but only developed these pains a few days after embryo transfer, it's likely she's pregnant as the pregnancy hormone can make OHSS worse (as it did in my case although i was not told this at the time).

hope this helps and let us know how she gets on.

xx

Thanks very much Shantala, my friend says her sister is feeling a little better, fingers crossed if she was over stimulated it hasnt escalated into anything more serious. Now shes just got the 2 week wait and the result to cope with!!! Having had 8 cycles i know thats not a walk in the park.
thanks again annabel
