is it stupid to plan tropical holiday in 1st trimester?

Post by karenvancouverisland »

i'm in the 2WW- find out Nov 13...but of course, that will just be the first of many hurdles (ie. follow up betas, u/s to confirm h/beat)

my hubbie and i sooooo need and deserve a carribean vacation..want to take one end of jan/begin of feb...i would be just finishing my 1st trimester (and due to DH's work- can plan to do this any later in year)..

IS THIS A STUPID IDEA?? ie. food poisoning, bad water, pregnancy complications in a strange country (probably mayan riviera or cuba)

i live in south-western canada (no snow, lots of winter rain though) and if this isn't a stupid idea, i'd love to do it.

any input is appreciated. on one hand, i think, if anything is going to go wrong, that will happen in whatever country i'm in...but i've wanted this so badly, and i'm only getting older and poorer, that i don't want to risk it.

thanks in advance

Its probably perfectly fine. But if you did get sick, you would never forgive yourself. I would see if could could find something to do locally!

hi lynnie, thanks :D yes...i would never forgive myself- unfortunately anything local would involve RAIN and temperatures pitiful compared to the carribbean!!

but maybe i should settle for some sort of compromise that keeps me in canada...

I say go for it. I think it would be nice relaxing time with your DH and you may need it. If you don't book it and don't concieve you may regret it as well. I don't think it could hurt. Just be careful what you eat and drink and take good care of yourself. Not jet skiing and scubdiving, but snorkling would be fun.

Karen - I would talk it over with your RE. If he/she says it should be OK then I would go, but I think if it was me I would purchase that travel insurance just in case something happens and you are not able to go.

I say go for it! just make sure you have a plan in case you need to go to the hospital. Yes, buy travelers insurance. Watch what you eat and drink (but, wouldn't you do that at home anyway?). Many women in the Caribbean conceive and have babies (even through IVF).

The only time I would consider not going anywhere faraway would be during the last couple of months before due date. Of course checking with your doctor first is always a good idea.

I don't want you to take this as an attack or anything, but I personally feel offended when people are fearful of going to the Caribbean because of water or food...I'm from there, and I can tell you that there are MANY people who live there and make it alright, and are perfectly healthy. Health precautions should be taken everywhere, not just in "a third world country."

Enjoy your vacation.

Come to Florida, Karen! Islamorada in the Florida Keys is one of my favorite places on earth! Cheeca Lodge or Little Palm Island would do you just right. You could also consider the USVI.

I say go for it. We plan our lives so much and I think we tend to overthink things some times. After all I've been through, I am getting tired of planning my life around "what may happen". If you are preggers, fantastic - you can relax and drink lots of fresh fish and fruits. If you aren't, great - you can drink yourself silly! 8)

Karen, i say go for it if your dr says okay. DH and i never got to go away before our final treatment and due to expecting twins and other issues my dr would not allow me to fly, i so need a holiday not had one for 2 years due to treatments. So for us until our little ones have their own seats we are staying put.Too complicated with 2 babies to fly.
good luck

Hey Karen

I would say go for it!! If you can make it any later though, even by a few weeks I would try to, just because you might still be feeling sick as a dog with morning sickness in the first tri!
We went to Belize and Honduras, Mexico and the Cayman Islands on a cruise when I was 15 weeks preg, and it was great! Just had to be careful with the bottled water - and other normal pg precautions.

Like Cocosmomma said, if it doesn't work out as you hope, you can make the most of cocktails!

Good luck
jude :)

hi everyone, thanks so much for all your replies!! :D

i loved hearing the positivity..i'm a bit of a travelling novice (you could probably tell), so it was great to get that reality check and to talk to you ladies from around the world.

i have my heart set on the caribbean..so thanks esperanza for the personal note on the area :D

i think i'll need to be reasonable, prepared...but realistic that many places can provide me good medical care, if needed.

I say go and have some fun!
My DH and I are going to Mexico, even though we will be in our second trimester by then if things keep going well. We are taking a cruise out of L.A., which works better for us that trying to do a long flight and booking hotels. (Yes, we bought the insurance as well!)
Something I've learned from years of travel - even though it is a tropical location, it is still Jan/Feb, and the weather is still a little cooler. Bring clothes you can layer in case of rain or chills. (Our last trip was in early Feb last year and the weather was constant drizzle except for one or two days. Warmer than Seattle, but still not the perfect April/May sunshine!)
Like you, I won't be drinking, horseback riding, etc, but there are still lots of fun things to do, like shopping, exploring, meeting people! Gambling away our child-to-be's college fund!
Have a good time and enjoy yourself!

BFP with 1st IVF! 1st beta 60.85, 2nd beta 975!! Its a boy!
3rd trimester starts February 14th.
