Searching for an IVF clinic......to old for NHS treatment!

Post by janem »

Hi everyone
Thanks for your messages. They really cheered me up. I've had a quick read through the latest postings and wish everyone lots of luck for this week waiting to take preg tests and starting IVF cycles.

I have endo and have been told I need IVF. I'm wading through all the IVF clinics in the SE London area having found out today that my local hospital won't treat me on the NHS because I'm over 35! When will these NICE IVF guidelines come about that will recommend the increased age of treatment to 40 and more free attempts??

Does anyone have any experiences with IVF treatment at UCLH, Chelsea and Westminster, Lister or ARCG? I would be really grateful to hear how you found them or if you know of a good place in central or SE London

Thanks Jane

Hi Jane,

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the clinics you mentioned. But I am a patient at Guys Hospital and also know of someone who is at the Bridge Centre (both are in London Bridge). I am very happy with the treatment I have received at Guys and it is very convenient for home and work. I don't think they are up there with the likes of the Lister and ARGC when it comes to results (but I have heard that the ARGC in particular tended to replace 3 embryos in the past - so not sure how their results will fare now that they can only replace 2). I also know that Guys is a bit cheaper than some other clinics because it is a non-profit making organisation (IVF is £1,700 + drugs).

I think if you look on the HFEA website it will give you each clinics results - and also guidelines as to what you should look for when you are chosing a clinic.

Hope this helps and good luck with your decision.

I believe the nice guidelines come into effect April 2005.

Someone told me the other day that she spoke to the nurse about it and was told that you have to have been ttc for 2 years without any external help, and you need to meet certain criteria before you can go on the waiting list. The criteria is as follows
1) No previous children by either partner nor no children living at your home ie adopted
2) Couples must have been in a stable heterosexual relationship for more than 2 years
3) Woman must be under 37 and have normal FSH levels
4) Neither partner has been previously sterilized
5) Male must be under 55
6) Woman's body mass index should be normal
7) Age 23-39

You have to meet this criteria to be put on the list, and also meet it when it is your time for treament.

See http://www.drfoster.co.uk for more info on clinics and results.

Hope this helps.

hi jane, i was with the lister. they have good results there and you can be seen quite quickly. staff are nice. to be honest it didn't work for me but i had only one go there so who knows what might have happened.

the argc has really good results too. i didn't go there but have seen and heard some really positive stories about how thorough they are.

uchl, i'm due to have my baby there but don't know about their ivf results.

sorry i haven't been much help but if you choose to go with the lister then i'm happy to answer any questions. might not be relevant but the other place i used was holly house in essex.

best wishes
