Holidays and blood tests

Post by Helen Reid »

Hi

Went to my gp today to ask about going on holiday in May for a week and i will be 7 months he says that i should be fine but i would have to check with the airline etc. My dh is vexcited about the idea but i am not so sure. Has anybody been or heard of people being away at that stage.
I told him that i would need to buy new clothes and that didn't put him off the idea (thats a shocker).

Also my blood pressure was 142 over 90 (i think i not very good at these things) and he said it would need to be kept an eye on. Is that abit high my dh said it was.
He also asked about the blood tests for downs etc (i think thats what its for i told you i'm crap at this) i was only told about it the other week and he said 16 wks is really the lastest they do it and i was to discuss it with my dh. I have to make an appointment with the midwife on Tuesday if i want it. I don't know if i want to know but if something is wrong you can prepare for it. I will read all my books tonight again i really need to understand all these things.
Can you give me your thoughts please.

Hi,

i think going on hols when you are 7 months will depend on how far you are flying and how big and uncomfortable you feel. I feel huge already and by 7 months i'm sure i'll just be sitting on my nest waiting!!

We didn't have the downs test. Basically because if the nuchal came back as high risk i would be reluctant to have the amnio because of the raised risk of m/c. Also, as we are having twins what would we have done if one was yes and the other no? I think if theres anything wrong they will see it anyway at the 20 wek scan so we would still have time to prepare ourselves for it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi Helen...I flew at 36 weeks but only because I had to (moving cities). A friend flew home (Seattle to Norway) at 8m and said she felt fine so I guess it's down to how much you want to be away (pma an'all that).

I had an amnio at 15 weeks because I wanted to know. There was also no nuchal test available. It's extremely personal but at my age (I was 38.5) it felt like the right thing to do. One thing though, you mentioned a blood test...amnio isn't a blood test so perhaps we're talking about different things? Amnio is the collection of a phial of amniotic fluid via a rather long needle through the stomach. It sounds and looks a 100 times worse than it feels. Like during EC, it helps if you stare at the ultrasound screen. I found waiting for the results much, much worse than the test itself.

take care
Debra.

hi Helen

When I flew to Mauritius at 16wks I asked if I need any special insurance and they said no not at 16wks, but certain airlines won't let you fly after 28wks unless you have special insurance and permission from your doctor. So you might need to check that out.

I'm nearly 7 months now and I honestly don't think I would fit comfortably into an airline seat - not even in Club/First! However, like the other Helen I'm having twins so its likely you won't be as big!

As for the tests - its a really personal decision. I wonder if you are thinking of the Barts Triple Test which can give an indication as to the chances of Downs and Spina Bifida - these are simple blood tests. Then should you wish you could go on and have an amnio, which Debra has explained.

I have to say my thoughts were the same as Helen (other one!) - even if they had said the chances were high I wouldn't have wanted to risk having a m/c so I wouldnt have wanted an amnio and therefore I couldn't see that I would gain anything from having the tests. Also at the 20wk scan they will detect any major abnormalities - we only have to look at poor Dagny to see this does happen.

But, its a purely personal choice and one only you can make!

Hi Helen

Wanted to echo what the others said really - how you feel! I am off to Cyrpus - well north Cyprus at Easter and I will be 24 wks with twins - hope all ok!!!!!!!! Couldn't or wouldn't feel like much after that!
As for blood pressure - this is high but mine shoots up at scans - normally it is 120/70 and went up to something like 140/85!!!!!!!!!! They tend to laugh as it goes down again after scan!
As for tests - all individual - we couldn't have the triple bloods as having twins and not much good for them - you can have them - they are an indicator. The more accurate one is nuchal fold which we had - they give this to all patients over 35 and all those on IVF (so we counted on both scores!) at my hospital. You can only have this between 11 and 14 weeks anyway so think you have missed that. It's personal choice - depends on what risk you get and what you think you might do!

hi helen, i just booked a holiday yesterday for begining of may and will be 61/2 mths. to be honest i checked out with the gp where we could go and got a list of places to avoid (anywhere with malaria) but didn't check when i should stop flying. i assumed it's ok.

the tests you asked about will start with blood tests and a scan before anything intrusive happens and this is only with your consent. i had the nuchal scan and blood tests and i'm glad i did but it is really a personal choice.

best wishes,

phil
