Preemie baby and bottle

Post by sugabeanzs »

I have a preemie baby (twin A) who is not sucking the bottle right. I mean she will go at it for a few minutes but then get tired and stop or fall asleep. She does not eat until she is full. She is almost 4 mo. (2 mo adjusted). She also sometimes just does not want to eat when you know she is hungry. Any one had this problem? Any suggestion? I think I may just have to call a speech therapist or something to figure out what is going on.

Has she always had problems with the bottle, or just recently? We had a scare when our girl started getting tired and not getting much milk, but then after a couple days she was fine again; we think she just had a cold. I don't know if that would apply to your situation.

She has never had a great latch but just now that she is taking almost 4 oz it just seems to wear her out. But like this morning she woke up starving and took the whole thing no problem. So I think it is just getting harder for her now that she is taking more since she never had that great of a suck to start with. I am going to keep an eye on it over the weekend and if it is not better Monday I will call a therapist or something. Hopefully it is a stuffy nose or something even though she does not sound sick or act sick.

try the medela special needs bottle...are you in the UK? if so they sell it on mothercare.com...if not I think they call it a Haberman bottle in the US but it's the same thing. It worked for us, in fact I'm thinking of reintroducing it as my 7.5month old now won't take a bottle again! Good luck.

4 oz at a sitting is a lot for that age, I think. We usually only fill our bottles to 3 oz for our five month old. She has a small stomach - more than that and she tends to spit the extra right back up.

Hey suga
Could it be that you need to use a faster teat now perhaps the flow is to slow and bub is getting tired trying to drink her whole bottle

We had to change bottles from the expensive BPA free Avent to the cheaper NUKS bottles. The nipple was shaped wrong for Zach's mouth. He has a higher palate or roof of his mouth ...and the NUKS nipple fits his palate now. He doesnt spit a ton out the sides of his mouth anymore, nor does he get tired trying to suck on the other type of nipple. I would try one bottle of NUKS to see and also like someone else said try a faster nipple. I would also have your pedi check for tongue tie...Zach had it and we got him clipped when he was just 4 days old. He could suck much better after that.
