Just had ET. RE told me to go home & have sex -thoughts?

Post by Kas101 »

Just had a 3 day transfer, and my Re's advice is to take it easy today and then tomorrow start having regular sex with DH. He says it increases the chances of implantation and some component in the semen actively encourages this.

I am kind of scared to do this as my last RE said strictly no sex or orgasms till after first scan. My concerns are that (going to get graphic now) that if my newly put in embies are floating around the uterine cavity, wont DH's semen kind of envelop them and then they will come out along with his semen?? These embies wont even impant for another 2/3 days - how can sex be 'good'. My RE says it WILL help and it increases pregnancy rates.

ANy thoughts??? Last cycle we didnt do it and i got a BFN. Has anyone had sex so soon and got a BFP?

I was told no sex until the first u/s/. I agree with you it doesn't sound like it could be good for the embies. I didn't have sex until after the first u/s and I am 17.5 weeks preg w/twins. So it does work without having sex immediately. I say do what feels right to you.

Actually, I've heard this. I myself would be too freaked out and scared to try it. I, like you, would worry about them being knocked around and attacked by sperm. I would just lie as still as I can for a few days and not do anything too straining. That counts sex out in every way so I say leave your babies alone to do what they need to do.
But I did find an artical about, it's a little hard to read but I thought I'd post it for you ladies anyway. Here's to a BFP with or without sex!!

Abstract:
Insemination transmits to the female reproductive tract constituents of seminal plasma that target uterine epithelial cells to activate a cascade of inflammatory and immunological changes. Experiments in rodents show seminal factor signalling acts to 'condition' the female immune response to tolerate the conceptus, and to organise molecular and cellular changes in the endometrium to facilitate embryo development and implantation. The active factors in seminal plasma are identified as members of the transforming growth factor-β family, with the relative balance of active moieties influencing the precise character of the female tract response. Experiments in rodents show that disruption of seminal plasma priming causes foetal growth retardation and changes in placental structure, with long-term consequences for the growth of the neonate. Recent studies indicate a similar physiological function and molecular basis for seminal plasma actions in the pig. In gilts, seminal plasma elicits an endometrial response characterised by recruitment of inflammatory leukocytes and induction of several pro-inflammatory cytokines and cyclo-oxygenase-2. The consequences are evident throughout the pre-implantation period of early pregnancy with altered leukocyte populations and cytokine parameters seen for at least 9 days. Exposure to semen also alters the dynamics in pre-implantation embryo development with an increase in the number of embryos and in their viability. Furthermore seminal plasma influences the temporal kinetics of ovulation, corpus luteum development and steroid production in the ovary. Dissecting the actions of seminal plasma may facilitate development of strategies to ensure maximal fertility and reduce embryo mortality in the pig.

We were told no sex till after the pregnancy test. We actually didn't make it but about a week. It wasn't "normal" lovemaking as we were both scared even though we were going ahead & I didn't have orgasm...I had heard the contracting of the womb wasn't good. I got a bfp. Once the blood test confirmed, the dr. gave us the go ahead to resume normal sexual activity. I say, like the others, follow your gut instinct. I'd be terrified to do anything vigorous after only a couple days though.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this, and Silver angel, thanks for the research notes (which kind of support doing it).

I personally am still very worried to do it, but my RE is very confident its a good idea. Its even in his discharge notes after ET!!! DH says its up to me, and i still dont know. At 1 day past 3day transfer i know these embies are not thinking about attaching yet, so im worried they might get 'flushed out'. My RE says sex (and specifically semen) wil HELP them implant so doing it after implantation is too late to get the benefit..

So confused... any further thoughts appreciated as i guess its crunch time!!!!

I heard the same a PP, no sex for 2 weeks. I wouldn't worry about your embies coming out. That won't happen. But I have heard that uterine contractions is not good. I would go with your gut instinct. After going through ER and all the drugs, I have to admit that sex was the farthest thing from my mind till after a week or so. Good Luck.

Sounds strange because everything I've read says no sex, heavy lifting, aerobic exercise, etc. My RE says no sex. Good luck with that decision and I'm glad DH is leaving it up to you.
