FREE IVF ON NHS..ANYONE KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Post by SJ BROWN »

Feeling stressed of late as wanting to start FET but cant at the moment(see my other thread) so thought I would ring my surgery re NHS tmt.....

Basically, will be doing private FET but if this does not work do not know if or when we can afford another £5k for full tmt..............
Knowing our luck the free goes will entail long waiting lists but thought no harm in asking....

Well........they say on the news it will be announced this week so thought I would ring my DRs surgery----you would think they would be forearmed with info due to press announcements etc.....

I was gobsmacked by their response, they basically said they did not have any info yet(I understand this) and when it is announced they would need to have practice meetings etc with drs to decide if their practice would be offering it!!!!!
Am i being thick but I thought the government were announcing that eveyone would be offered FREE nhs tmt......

If anyone finds out anything I would appreciate any available information

Sorry to be posting _ve thoughts today....will try and be more +ve next time........just feel everything is against us at the moment.....

hihi sarah
i too read somewhere about ivf being available to everyone (there was
age restrictions i think top end was 38)
It might be worth trying to phone the NHS help line surely they must
have some info, i phoned them about 3wks ago regarding a nuchal
scan, i thought is was available to women of a certain age, only to
find out it was down to your area..........the usual post code lottery !!!

Hi Sarah

I believe that the NICE guidelines for IVF funding are due out tomorrow. However, they are just guidelines rather than rules and so it is up to Health authorities whether they will follow them or not. So all of the different Primary Care Trusts will have to have meetings after tomorrow to decide what they'll do.

As I understand, NICE will recommend 3 free fresh IVF cycles and 3 FETs for women under 40 (with some conditions attached) but the Health Secretary is likely to overrule this and recommend only 1 free cycle.

Sorry, it's not the news that you wanted to hear.

being new to this, I would also like to know what ivf costs etc.....
I think it should be free 100% regardless of your post code. How much does it cost on nhs anyway? Sorry if you think I am being thick, but only found out yesterday that ivf might be our only option, so looking into ivf is something new for us. MANY THANKS X X X

Also does anyone know the cost of Donor sperm too??

x x x Thanks again!!! x x x x

Hi Nicola
Welcome to this site, you will find it a godsend.........

We dont get NHS in our are at the mo, apparantly it was on the news again today-Im going to watch 10.30 news as our clinic was on there(probably only local news-meridian)
I think one of the concerns over the new guidelines of everyone having nhs tmt is the worry that there are not enough trained people in the NHS, The consultant at our clinic was interviewed and stressed his concern over lack of experienced embryologists in our area, so am not holding put much hope at getting tmt on the NHS.It does worry me though, cos I expect it will have a knock on effect for private waiting lists too..

Re costs,1) if you live in a postcode area which offers full funding it will cost nothing 2) some postcode areas offer to pay for your drugs via the NHS so you just pay for the ivf etc 3) unlucky postcode areas of which I live get no help at all, not even for blood tests.......

Each clinic is different but when we did our tmt we paid approx £5500. This was about £3000 for IVF, £900 for ICSI £100 for blood tests and £1500 for drugs(this price varies depending on what drugs you need) .........
after spending £5500 we have no pregnancy but have 6 frozen embryos.

We are just starting a frozen cycle which will cost £653 plus drugs......

Am praying for it to work as we will struggle to fund another tmt

Good luck, hope this helps

Sarah,

As I understand it NICE suggests we all get 3 goes if you are under 40 but doesnt put a time limit on when that has to start. I think what has been said so far is that all should get minimum of 1 go now progressing to 3 in due course.

Try looking at the NICE website - www.nice.org.uk

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your reply, it has shocked me that this can cost so much money, I certainly wouldnt be able to afford even 1 treatment. Do you know at all, what the "unlucky" postal code area's are?
Knowing my luck, I live bang slap in the middle of an unlucky area!!
I live in Ipswich.
I would move..........hehehehe!!

Hi Nicola,

Guess what - I live in Ipswich as well and I think that we are some of the lucky ones. The Fertility unit at Ipswich hospital gives free IVF but you have to go through lots of other stuff first and then sit on the waiting list for ages. I have been on the list for about 18 months so far and last time I spoke to them they said I was 21st on the list so that is likely to be the tail end of the year. I think their practice is to give 2 goes to each person but am not sure when that will change.

Hope this helps,
Alli.

Hello me again!!

Just been reading on the net that ivf will be for certain free to every one by april 2005, providing they are under 39 and over 21. and with a problem on either his or her side, or both or being activly trying for 3 years plus. This reagrdless of where they live in the uk. But it will only be one go.

Cost of IVF on the NHS

Post by packer12freeserve »

Hello Nicola,
We were just wondering where you got the information from regarding everyone having one free attempt on the NHS not depending on postcode as we have been told by our doctor that they will not be funding in our area at all.
Thanks,
Nicky
