Karen - Sorry to hear DH is being an a--! Although the cooking story made me laugh. MEN!!! I have a weird situation right now in that my husband is still looking for a job, so while it has its benefits (he is taking care of Noah part time), it is also hard at times. I don't know. Some days I am so thankful he is not working right now so that he can take care of Noah (those are the days I typically work from home, so I also kind of help), but then other days I am resentful because I have to work. It is weird. My husband has been enormously helpful with Noah...so much so that sometimes I feel like I am not doing enough. I know that may sound silly, but that is how I feel...like I suck as a mom...maybe because our roles are somewhat reversed, you know? I guess being sick for the last few days has not helped anything. Anyway, my husband just needs to find a job as I know it is hard on him not being able to contribute.

Well, we are worried about Noah not being able to hold up his head yet...and one side is flat from how he sleeps. This worries us, too. Anyone else have that? Noah is cooing and giggling..though not sure he has had an all out laugh yet. He is just such a happy baby.

Seltzer - I told my husband about Keira's sleeping and he told me to tell you about the humidifier we use. We really think it helps Noah to breathe easier and it also serves to block out some of those little noises he makes (I also think he likes the "white" noise). We used a warm mist humidifier last night and it was terrible because it was too quiet and didn't seem to generate much of anything. We usually use the cool mist one and it is great. We are going back to that one tonight! Anyway, just a thought....

As far as your DP...I just don't know. Babies are tough. Sometimes I feel like Noah takes up ALL of our time and since we have no one here to help us, it seems like all we do is care for him. But you know - that will change. They get older, more independent, everything. It is so hard for me to balance work and everything else. There are just not any hours in the day for "me". Oh well - I know that is not forever. I can't imagine how a single, working mom does it!!!!

Ok, I have to run. Noah is napping, my husband ran to the grocery store, and I need to finish working.

Take care....Tina

I was horrified today to read that Mylicon Infant Gas drops were recalled. Thankfully I have been using the original drops, which aren't involved in the recall. If any of you are using this you should check the lot #.

Recalled: Mylicon infant anti-gas drops

Tue, Nov 11, 2008 (BabyCenter News) — Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co have announced a recall of about 12,000 bottles of Mylicon infant anti-gas drops in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The drops may contain metal fragments. The potential for serious injury is low, and any effects are expected to be temporary and resolved without medical treatment. No injuries have been reported.

The recall involves Infants' Mylicon Gas Relief Dye Free (simethicone-antigas) non-staining drops sold in one-ounce plastic bottles with the lot numbers SMF007 or SMF008. The recall does not affect any Original Infants' Mylicon Gas Relief products (1/2-ounce or 1-ounce size) or Infants' Mylicon Gas Relief Dye Free drops non-staining (1/2-ounce size).

The infant drops were distributed nationwide after October 5.

Grace Blasco, BabyCenter News

What you can do:

• Stop using the drops immediately and contact Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co toll-free at (800) 222-9435 for more information.

• If you've given this product to your baby, contact your child's health care provider.

• Keep abreast of children's safety recalls by checking our recall finder.

Thanks Tina for your sympathy RE my DP. I just pray she will do the work she needs to do to be more emotionally mature. I know she is able...it's whether she chooses to put in the effort. Keira is once again sleeping (last night, anyway - 9.5 hours, WOO HOO), and I am working on her naps. I have been reading the Baby Whisperer book a lot and getting ideas. Mostly I am just trying to pay attention to her fatigue signs and respond to them ASAP. She has been napping better since I started but, like Noah, she doesn't do great with the naps. I think consistency (total sameness everyday) and persistence are key. About the paci issue, Shari - can you teach Elia to go to sleep without it? They say not to use props for sleep, but I do rock Keira to bed each night and (knock on wood) there has not been a problem. I am, however, trying to cut down on her using the paci when she is falling asleep...I offer it to her at different times throughout the day to make sure she's getting her sucking needs met but I figure she shouldn't HAVE to have it to sleep. (I say this as she's now sleeping in her co-sleeper with the pulg firmly in her mouth, LOL.) Basically I'm trying to teach her to get to sleep all different ways - rocking, no rocking, patting on the back, just lying in my arms, etc. Anyway, Shari, maybe if you worked on getting him to sleep without it that would solve the prob. They say it doesn't take long for a baby under 6 mos to break a habit. It's worth the effort and lack of sleep now to not have a worse problem later on. Trust me: I know this because of my son, who did not sleep through the night in his own crib until he was 11 mos old. We co-slept w/him until then, at which point we had to Ferberize him (only took 2 nights of very little crying). I didn't have a clue about reading a baby's cues w/my son...I don't think I ever knew what he needed, and this was not good. I was always frustrated and freaking out about his crying rather than trying to understand WHY he was crying. He still is a crier, though. He was a lot of tantrums everyday, but as his vocabulary gets better they are decreasing. He was a late talker - he has just started using words and he will be 2 in a month.

Tina - about your feelings of resentment and being a bad mother, etc.: I can relate (not now, but with my son). Having a baby is so hard and so challenging in many different ways emotionally, whether it's stuff btwn your partner and you or just within yourself. I felt a lot of negative stuff when DP had our son. I felt like a HORRIBLE parent and sometimes I was resentful that DP had the baby and I didn't. I felt trapped and miserable sometimes. Sometimes I thought I had made a mistake by choosing to be a parent. DS was a challenge, which made all these feelings even more difficult. I would get SO mad at him for crying incessantly. It was tough. DP also had a rough time: she felt a lot of resentment toward me and the baby...it was so much work I guess it just pissed her off, LOL. She also resented the hell out of DS's nanny because he was so attached to her. I guess I would just say: don't judge yourself...you must have empathy for yourself. Being kind to yourself will be good for Noah as well. You are certainly NOT a bad mother. I think you are just getting adjusted to a new life, and with time you will feel OK (and actually quite good!) about it all. Hang in there...hope you don't mind my 2 cents about it.

Later...

Seltzer-
FOA-Thanks for the heads up on Mylicon!

I am sorry you're having relationship stress. These transitional times of starting work, getting baby on schedule, etc., are a breeding ground for spouses to argue. My husband stresses me out when we talk about my job possibilities, especially regarding amount of hours. He always adds that he supports my decision fully, but then goes on to say how every day I don't work is a lot of $, etc. Argh! I understand him, but I wish he'd be more sensitive to how I FEEL. I am sure it's not exactly the same in your home, but I understand how easy it is to argue at this time.

Tina-
I am no doctor, but did Noah's ped. mention 'torticollis'? My baby has it, and it's fairly common. It's when the baby's head favors turning to one side, and so the back of the head on that side gets flat while the other side stays rounded. More importantly, the neck muscles on the opposite side become a bit tight due to lack of use. It's not a big worry, but I was referred to physical therapy, and learned simple ways of holding and laying him down, and also how to stretch the muscle with gentle stretches. It's gotten a bit better since I've become aware of it and started working on 'balancing it out' so to speak. Of course, I'm not sure that's what Noah has at all, but I thought I'd mention it as perhaps it was overlooked when you went to his doctor for checkups.

I am going to try waking Elia a little later for his last feeding. We shall see if that helps him sleep through till the morning. I am starting to lose it from lack of sleep. Yaaah!

Be well everyone.

Tina - so good to hear from you!! Keira is doing the EXACT same thing w/her sleeping for the past few weeks. I am losing my mind in a big way. I am desperate. She now sleeps 6 hours MAX (versus the 7-9 hrs she was doing) and has a TON of trouble falling asleep. She sometimes wakes up @ 2 a.m. too, wanting to hang out and socialize. Help! DP and I are complete wrecks. We have all been sick (DP, me, DS, and the baby) on and off for WEEKS. This was what she did yesterday:

Two 30 minute naps (totally insufficient - she was exhausted)
Bedtime at 6:30 because she was wiped out & very crabby
Between 6:30 and 8:00 woke up 3-4 times
11:00 "dream feed" & diaper change
2:00 woke up wanting to play...stayed up for about 30 min.
4:30 woke up wanting to play...stayed up for about 1 hour
5:30 had bottle & fell asleep in bed w/me (I know this is bad but I am so tired I can barely function)
7:30 up for the day (along with her comatose mother)

She is eating every four hours & takes in about 30 ounces/day. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have still not lost all the weight (~ 10 lbs. to go) and am not in shape. My body is quite squishy. I have no idea where all my muscles went. Yuk. I don't have stretch marks, thankfully, but my abdomen doesn't look back to normal yet. It's not bad, but it's not what it was. I haven't been doing any exercises though...am just too tired to do anything. I am not even walking or anything. My major feat for the day is doing laundry and sterilizing bottles...

Hope to hear from someone soon! :)

Seltzer - Sounds like Noah for the last 3 nights. I just don't get it!!! The Baby Whisperer states that they become more aware of their surroundings at this age and also are developmentally growing - so maybe that is it??? Noah has been weird about his food lately where he has been pushing the bottle away a lot...which is weird. We are so screwed up though as we still have him on a 3 hour schedule. He eats 7 ounces now...but I guess he is probably consuming close to 36-38 ounces a day in total. Help! Noah was such a great sleeper - typically 8-9 hours. This was last night....

9 p.m....bed (which we know is too late)
12:45 a.m....started stirring
2 a.m.....wide awake
2:30...we fed him; up for like 1 1/2 hours
4 a.m....back to bed
6:15 a.m....awake again. I desperately ask my husband just to put him in the bed with us. He puts him next to me and Noah is asleep again within minutes!!! So ha - I did the same thing!!!!
7:30 a.m....he wakes up fully

My husband said the babysitter (watches him 1/2 days on Fri) said he only took a 35 min nap this morning! HUH???

Geez - I guess this is just a weird time for them. CRAP!!!! I was hoping the last 3 nights were a FLUKE!!!! AAAAAHHHHHH!!!! I offered my husband $20 for every time he gets up with Noah and lets me sleep!!!

Hey - it is nice to know we are not alone....but GEEZ!!!

Well, Noah's nightime drama continues! He is still waking up a lot and yet most of the time, he isn't really awake - just stirring a lot. Oh well. Hopefully it ends soon. In the mean time, he is just growing so big and precious. When I was rocking with him last night in his room, I realized how lucky I was. It was Dec 13th of last year when we officially found out we were pregnant. What a journey. Thank goodness for my husband - he wakes up most of the time at night to help get Noah back to sleep. I am sooo grateful. I felt bad this morning as I only heard Noah twice..ends up it was more like six times and I slept through most of it. Ooopppssss.

How is everyone?

Tina,
Don't feel too bad (or I should say, alone) when it comes to nighttime awake time. Eliya wakes up 1-3 times a night for his passy and/or additional feeding. I can definitely relate to the complete in-love feeling. I don't know what to do with him sometimes, I am just that crazy about him :).

We have actually had a bit of a stressful couple of days. He came home from day care two days ago with a fever of 102.5. It's been down and up again since then, and he has a doctor's appointment this morning, so I am staying home from work. Plus, he needs to be with me at home, not at day care with some other screaming babies.

However, that's not the most stressful part of these past few days. Last night, in the middle of the night, we were awoken by a blood curdling crying/screaming. As it turns out, Eliya had fallen out of his stroller. We had failed to see that it was not lying completely flat, and so he slowly slid out. We are NOT using the stroller as a bed anymore. He had actually been sleeping exclusively in his crib, but because he had a fever, he needed to be strolled before falling asleep. Seeing him crying on the floor was a nightmare, and thinking about it again has me feeling a bit sick. We just didn't think it was possible for that to happen when the stroller was stationery. BIG lesson. Thank goodness it's fairly close to the floor, so I don't believe he fell too hard or fast. He does have a little bruise above his upper lip. Poor baby. This morning, he is his regular smily, happy-go-lucky self. WE on the other hand are still traumatized.

Hope all is well with all the new mommies and babes.

Have a great day!
xo,
Shari

Shari - I am so sorry about Elia! That must have been so scary!!! I am always so paranoid of dropping Noah or anything happening. I am sure he is fine though - babies are so amazingly resilient!!! Noah has yet to be sick....I feel so grateful. My husband and I both had terrible colds and sneezed and coughed all over him...and nothing! We were soooo thankful. They say babies can run really high fevers and it isn't anything to worry about. Still - I am sure it is hard to see him like that.

Noah slept 10 hours last night. We were shocked. Hopefully he is adjusted to his new bed...and over his little "phase". Oh - please, please let it be!!!

Is everyone ready for the holidays???

Ok, I need to get to bed. Take care all!

OMG Shari, I am so glad Elia is OK. Scary is right. My son fell out of his crib when he was around 10 mos. old and it was terrifying. We heard the most horrific THUMP from downstairs in the kitchen, and we went running upstairs to find him in a heap on the floor, screaming. We went to the ER and he had a CT scan and was fine. Figures a blizzard was going on during all of this. Kids can make you crazy! We now have a "crib tent" on his crib so he his trapped. He doesn't mind it and it saves our sanity. He turned two the other day (12/10) and is just SOOO much fun lately. What a riot he is. I must say I do NOT like the first yr. over the later stuff...infancy is so hard. It gets to be so much fun when they get a little older. Keira is doing great, though...we went for her 4 mos. check-up today. She is 97th percentile for height and 95th for weight! Apparently I have a giant baby on my hands. And I remember when I was pregnant thinking I had a freakishly long baby in there and, whaddya know, I did. She is still having trouble sleeping--UGH UGH UGH. She has a cold now too, which makes her sleeping even worse. She is just the best, though, always laughing and smiling. She is a blast and never cries. I started the rice cereal two nights, but stopped it. I might start it up again after her cold. Tina - are you doing it? How does Noah do? And how do you get him to sleep 10 hrs?!?!?!?!? BTW, I transitioned Keira to a 4-hour schedule pretty easily...just do 3.5 hrs first, and see how he does and how long he will go. Then bump it up to 4. He will adjust pretty well I think, since their stomachs are bigger now & can hold more. I think part of the key to it is not letting them snack. I feel like I am 90 yrs old lately...every part of my body aches like crazy, mostly my back and legs--particularly my right leg. Anyone having any aches and pains? My chiro said yesterday that she thinks I have bursitis in my right hip...just one more damn thing to deal with. I am going to my dr. on Tues. DP and I are working on our issues and doing OK. DS had a big birthday bash. I posted a pic on photobucket of me, DP, and the kids (and my sister). It's nice to NOT be preg!! LOL. OK, gotta run.

Seltzer-
Thanks for your concern. Eliya is fine, TG. He didn't get a head bump, just a little mark above his lip which is fading already. Your son and daughter sound amazing. Eliya is also so much fun, such a sweet happy baby.

BTW- I realize I 'changed' the spelling of Eliya. Reason: my dh put him down with a 'y' when filling out passport/legal forms. So legally he is now Eliya with a 'y'. On his birth certificate his name is written in hebrew so it doesn't conflict with how I spelled it over there, TG. Just have to get used to the new english spelling.

Tina-
Yes, how DO you get Noah to sleep 10 hours straight?

How much are your babies eating at a time? Eliya eats between 5 and 7, sometimes even 4. He is gaining wait just fine, just curious as to how his 'contemporaries' are doing food-wise.

Okay, gotta go bake a chocolate torte.

Seltzer-
I almost forgot something very important; to commiserate with you over aches and pains. If you are feeling 90 yo, I am feeling 100. My right knee is shot, and EVERY joint in my body aches constantly. It's downright depressing. My orthopedist put me on a wonder drug called 'etopan' which helps, but I certainly don't want to have to take it long term. He sent me for physical therapy which I hope helps.

How are you feeling now emotionally, btw? I am still on the anti-dep., feeling better. Glad to hear you are working things out with dp.

Okay, chocolate torte time.

Shari - God love you for making a torte while you are working and caring for an infant AND it's the holiday season. OMG I am not that high functioning, LOL. I like Eliya's name spelled that way..it's the same pronunciation either way anyway. Did you have joint pain prior to having Eliya? What does your doc say about it, as in what is going on? I am afraid there's something heinous wrong with me...either that or I am incomprehensibly out of shape & have zero muscle tone (probably the latter). I am doing decent emotionally...am still taking 50mg Zoloft but am switching to Lexapro. I don't have the despair & feelings of dread and fear I had after I had the baby. Thank God, what a horrible experience that was. I still have a lot of anxiety, but not depression. Glad to hear you are feeling better. The postpartum time truly sucks.

Seltzer-
Okay, yes, I have had a history of joint/muscle pain. However, it was never ALL my muscles/joints hurting all at once, the way it is now. My theory is that whatever 'relaxin' hormone (I think that's what it's called) our bodies produce during pregnancy, allowed me not to feel the pain that the strain of the pregnancy put on my body. Because I really did not feel the pain during my very LARGE pregnancy. I had different discomforts then, not joint pain. Now, my body is screaming from the torture it endured during those last months of preg. I also have extra weight that I MUST lose which is not helping. To top it all off, I have an 'umbilical hernia'. It's basically a bump where my belly button is. So just in case the extra weight isn't bad enough, I have an extra bump which sticks out. Yay.

Re: the knee pain- I plan to start physical therapy. My orthopedist prescribed it. He said if after about 8 sessions it doesn't start to help, I will need to go for further testing (MRI, etc.).

Have a great week.
