Opinions on when its safe to buy Baby stuff?

Post by toobee »

Hey everyone,

I have a question and would like some advice from al you ladies. I am 19 weeks pregnant tomorrow with twins. My husband will be home for two weeks over the Christams holiday and he wants to go shopping for all the baby stuff. He wants to get it done now since we both have hectic scehdules and he thinks this is a good time when we both can be together and not be strseed since we have time off. He wants t put the cribs togther, get car sets, paint room, redo closet, etc....
I on the other hand wanted to wait till 26-30 weeks becuase I have had three miscarriages and I am terrified to bring baby stuff into the house yet in fear I may jinx it. Plus if something goes wrong, I think it wuld be so mcuh harder to cope.

Any help would help, OH, I will be 5 months on Christams Day, and my GYno doesnt think based on my size already that I will make it to 9 months based on her expereince with twins, she thinks I will probably deiver 3-4 weeks early, but then again she said I coud surpse her.

My husband and i also had a miscarriage at 14 weeks last year. We went out and registered at 15 weeks for these babies beause we felt that if anything we to go wrong it would have before the second trimester like last time. We're now 23 weeks along and feel very confidant that everthing will be fine. Our boys are healthy and our pregnancy is progressing normally.
I think at 19 weeks you should be confidant that you'll be fine too. So I think your safe to go ahead and get your stuff together. Remember also that with twins you never know when you might be put on bedrest or how early they might come.

Buy the Baby Bargains book...it's wonderful and rates everything from cribs to car seats, etc...
Don't start shopping until you've read/referred to this book.

My advice would be to wait until 30 weeks ESPECIALLY with twins. At the risk of sounding like doom and gloom things are more likely to go wrong b/t 20 & 30 weeks with twins than with singletons. I think it is better to wait. You might want to go ahead and look at stuff and pick out what you want but I would hold off buying. You can always order stuff off the internet if you know what you want especially car seats etc.

guess i'm of no help. We were buying stuff before we even did the transfer. I'm 6 weeks & the rooms completely ready & put together. I don't have miscarriage history though so I suppose that may make a difference on being a little more scared.

I am the total opposite! I was ready with my twins at like 18 weeks I think. I was put on bed rest at 20 weeks with my twins and delivered then at 31 weeks. So with twins I would have things ready earlier.

I think you should plan for things to go RIGHT, not wrong. You don't want to wait until 30 weeks, deliver at 31, and still have to be preparing the room after the babies are born.

I'm 17 weeks - we'll be starting to look at things after the holidays.

Hi there!

I too had to go through a miscarriage and I understand how cautious it can make you when you become pregnant again.

As you can see from the many answers, it's a very personal choice. I, too, wanted to be careful at first. Then I realized two things. Baby stuff is expensive! ;) Planning in advance, getting info from friends and in stores helped us figure out what models we wanted to buy and so on. It made it easier for both our families to figure out who would buy us what. And it also made it easier for us to spread the expenses over several months instead of having to buy everything at once. For example, it's a good thing to shop for your stroller and car seats in advance so you can figure out what you want. But it's better to buy it at the last minute because that way the warranties will last longer after you start using it. Now that we've got all the big items planned (not all bought, but planned), my mind is more at ease.

The second thing I realized was while reading a book I fell in love with, Secrets of a Baby Whisperer. In that book, the nurse advises us to have everything ready by the end of the second trimester. That way, even if the baby comes early or if you have to be put on bedrest, you have chosen the items that YOU want and you don't have to ask other people to choose or buy them for you. I couldn't imagine someone else picking baby stuff for me or installing it all while I had to lay in bed or worse, doing it in a complete rush during the short days of my delivery hospitalization, so it made a lot of sense to me. But again, it's a personal choice.

And of course, one last thing that I take into consideration is... Holidays and Boxing Days speciaaaaals! We bought the crib earlier this month and saved over a hundred bucks because it was on sale until Dec 15th. We had a really good deal. You can be sure I'll go to warehouse sales between the 26th and the 31st to buy baby clothes and fabrics for my little boy.

Whatever you choose, just follow your instinct because the person who knows what's best for you and your angels is YOU! :D

I say do it when you want to and whenever it makes you happy and works with your schedule.

We waited until after 30 weeks and still lost our son at week 36. I don't regret it and will probably get things ready around 30 weeks again next time. I felt much better (less stress) when we finally got everything put together and ready. The fact that it all came back down sucks, but there was nothing to suggest any problem so I still feel we did the right thing - for us. If you find something you love then get it - it will always be part of "this" baby.

Like the other person said you have to be positive and live like things are going to be OK !! Live like the glass if 1/2 full not 1/2 empty.

I agree - It is all really your own personal choice and what you feel comfortable with. We are coming up on 16 weeks and after all the problems we have been through we are hopeful, but still cautious and holding off on the baby gear until the third trimester. (We did buy a crib and changing table which were on sale new for over %50 off - couldn't resist that one! But it is in the garage, boxed up.)
Instead, I have been doing a baby scrapbook, putting all the ultrasound photos and mementos together in a book, and creating a baby fund for when we are ready to buy things in earnest.
