Twins!

Post by beth »

Hi everyone.

I was hoping some of you would be able to share some twin pregnancy and birth stories.

I am 8 wks along with twins, and I am starting to get scared. All I read about are complications, underdevelopment, and bed rest!

Is is possible to have twins and NOT have any complications?

What is the longest you can carry twins?

I understand that they come early and pre term labor is a big concern...

My first singleton pregnancy was very smooth, no complications, and I went into labor 4 days from my due date.

Am I hoping for too much for this one to be easy?? lol.

Thanks for any stories, both good and scary!!
Advice is very welcome too!

we are also pregnant with twins! I think sometimes only the bad stuff is posted online. There are plenty of twin pregnancies that go to 38-40 weeks but those stories don't tend to get posted as much!
There is a risk of premature labor but it is not that much higher than a singleton. Take it easy and eat a little more since you are feeding an extra :)
there is a twin forum on here and it is very helpful-join it-lots of moms with experience!

Beth! Congratulations! Twins are so much fun and I'm so glad you can join us! Come chime in on Double Trouble. We have had LOTS of successful birth stories and it's a great way to talk to mothers who have already had their babies.
Although I did have my twins 6 weeks early my pg was very uneventful and very smoothe. I loved being pg with them and seroiusly miss the newborn stage so I live thru all you new twin mommies-to-be! :D
I only entertained the positive and found it to be very helpful. My feeling was you have some control over your own outcome and even though I had 2 weeks of hospital bedrest and they were early my experience was amazing and I wouldn't change a thing.
Enjoy this amazing blessing and we are all here to answer any and all questions! Good luck!

Hey there. I'm 26 weeks along with twins myself and I remember being just as freaked out when I was at your stage. I analyzed every pain, even throb, every twitch. EVERYTHING!
I convinced myself my cervix was opening up and my babies would fall out any second. I was sure at one point that the pain in my back was pre-term labor and I would have to call my husband home from work so we could go to the hospital. I drove my doctor insane and went there right along with him.
After a while I calmed down and stopped freaking out over everything. After a while I realized that not every twinge was fatal to my babies and after realizing all that, I came to another realization; I was having a boring pregnancy.
A completely normal, completely uneventful, completely healthy pregnancy.
Now i know that I'm far from term and things can still happen, but I'm pretty confidant now that things are going to be ok.
All in all, Don't worry til you have soemthing to worry about. I waited so long to be pregnant and for the first 18 weeks I didn't enjoy my pregnancy at all due to all those worries. And for no reason. I hate that I'll never have that time back.
Be vigilant, but don't be paranoid and make the mistake I did. Have a great pregnancy and when you get a chance, visit us over at the Double/Triple+ trouble '09 thread!!

Beth- Congratulations! What a blessing to be carrying twins. I am almost 34 weeks with boy/girl twins and my pregnancy has been really good except at first I bled some but that was only because my uterus was stretching so fast. It has been uncomfortable at times but any pregnancy is going to have that. I have just felt so blessed to pregnant with twins that I haven't worried to much. Just know that if you are going to your dr. regularly then they should be able to catch anything that could be going on that is not normal. I am hoping to make it another couple of weeks and I think I will! I wish the best of luck to you! God bless you and your twins!

Congratulations! Try not to read too much (easier said than done)...
I agree that mostly negative 'stuff' is reported online.

I am in my 40s and carried my b/g twins to 37 weeks, no NICU time...they are so beautiful and healthy!

BUT, I did lie low from around 24 weeks on. Only had bedrest the last 2 weeks (I had high BP, and it went into overdrive the day of the ER delivery...not fun at all)...

When you are further along, and If you feel your tummy tighten as you walk out the door to see your mom, sister, go shopping, etc, go back inside, lie down, and tell yourself this:

1 day in your womb means so much to your babies..one hour, one moment...those final months are so important. YOu can shop, see family , etc, after the babies are born. But PAMPER your babies by taking it easy during the final months of pregnancy.

good luck

I will say I agree with woodcliff about taking it easy! I carried my twin girls to 30 plus 6 and wish they could have been in there longer! I was on bed rest at 20 weeks and on procardia to stop contractions. My water broke and the girls were born! They were in the NICU 6 and 7 weeks. Today they are healthy and thriving!

Congrats and just take it easy! Enjoy your time now because when they come it is all about them!! So worth it though! Twice the smiles, twice the coos, twice the love! It is such a joy!

Hi, I was 38 when i had treatment, i was 39 when i gave birth. I worked full time to 32 weeks and worked 1-2 days a week to 34 weeks. I was still doing work at home the week before i went into hospital. My consultant would not allow me to go past 38 weeks hospital policy, i was induced at 38 weeks, and ended up with a c-section at 38+2 weeks. I only ever had 1 night in hospital at 36 weeks as my bP was high, i had no protein in my urine ever and needed no extra vitamins or iron. I suffered badly from heartburn apart from that i had a great pregnancy. Both babies were fit and healthy, I was very poorly after with unexpected complications, but am now fine, most pregnancies go on to be fine.
Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy it goes so fast.

I bought a book B.Luke "When you expecting twins..." and first thing that made me go  it's the amount of food we are supposed to eat ! And according to this book, if we don't eat at least 3500 calories a day, we are not going to make it to term. :? And our babies will be underweight and spend a long time in NICU?And,oh,we have to put the most weight until 24 week(about 24 lb) Well,I personally did not have any m/s,but neither appetite.I still don't.And what about women who has terrible m/s?How they can put all this weight on?Of course,I make myself to eat,but there is no way I can do 3500 calories a day! I'm not a big eater normally, and now I struggle every time I'm in the store because I have absolutely no idea what in the world I 'd eat.I gained so far only 4 lb.
Is it really that important?Or should not worry too much about gaining weight and just eat when I'm hungry?

Hi Marina, being pregnant with twins requires us to eat no extra than with a singleton, also you only need an extra 200 calories a day for a healthy pregnancy. I ate what i wanted when i fancied it, in the first 12 weeks i only put on around 7lb, i had put on around 28lb by 28/30 weeks, i put on the same again in the last few weeks but most of this was from oedema(swelling). I was back to pre-pregnancy weight 3 weeks after birth, i only put on baby weight.
An important factor is to eat the correct stuff, i ate a very healthy balanced diet, very little junk/chocolate/sweets etc. I needed no supplements due to this. My babies were 6lb4 and 7lb1 at birth.

Hi Marina, with you all the way i am only 5'3, but i weighed around 140lb, i am a little chunky, however my babies were all front i looked normal from behind.
Another tip if you have time go to the swimming pool even if you just float around as you get bigger the weightlesness is fantastic, i went twice a week right up until going into hospital, i also walked a lot distance got less as i got bigger. \i beleive this all helped me bounce back afterwards.

Congratulations to all of you mommies and mommies to be!

Thank you all for your interesting stories....I think I am calming down a little bit....

Marina, I worried too about becoming a winnie the pooh look alike. I found this website where people who are pregnant with twins post pictures of their bellies at different weeks...why I looked, I don't know!!
I don't really have a big appetite, so I am eating small here and there (trying to keep it all healthy).

SilverAngel, your post made me laugh! I remember that feeling about the cervix opening up and the baby falling out!

I am surprised (and hopeful) at how many of you were able to carry the twins past 32 weeks! For some reason, I thought that was like a limit,,,,

Beth~ We were EXACTLY the same size when getting pg with twins! I'm 5'2" and go between 110-115. My OB did say to eat more for twins and it just makes sense. Gaining weight was actually a problem for me with the twins. I did eat the 3500 calories a day in an attempt to gain more weight and I still only managed 28 lbs. I would make high calorie fruit smoothies every day and drink juice which I don't normally do. It wasn't as hard as it sounds sadly enough. The extra weight does help to put fat on the babies and then if they are early and in the NICU they can maintain body weight easier. However, my babies were skinny little things and that was one of their biggest issues. This pg is so different! I eat. . .I gain weight! YIKES!

I bet you will look adorable pg! Dh use to say I looked like I was smuggling a basketball. :D Good luck!

Ladies, we have to stick together, I am small also, 5 foot 2 and normally 115 and athletic. I have had to sit around lately and hate it but still do hikes and dance a bit. Anyway, I am only 5 weeks but showing dramatically! I don't know if its bloat or what, I have an U/S Monday, I am way bigger than with the twins last time...miscarried them however. I have noticed a strong appetite, maybe because I only ate salads and really healthy stuff previously...I never imaging myself making it anywhere near full term because I am comparing myself against women with a taller frame. Then again, if they run out of room they will keep growing outward! YIIKES! My friend who was 5 2 with twins was 62 inches tall and 60 inches around at birth!
