This is my first attempt with IVF. I stopped taking the pill and started lupron and have been taking it for 11 days now. I never really got a period just heavy spotting. They had me come in yesterday for blood work and ultrasound and found a cyst on my left ovary. Because of the cyst my estrogen level was high. My doctor wants me to stay on the lupron for one more week to see if it will shrink the cyst and bring my estrogen level down. If not we have to cancel the cycle. I am so upset and don't undertand how this happened when I do not have any history of cysts. It is also upsetting that we will have to cancel and start over with the pill.
I read some things on line that lupron can cause cysts. Is this true?
Has anyone ever had this happen to them. Do you have any advise. My first IVF exerience is not going well at all and I was hoping it would work the first time.
Thanks,
*Ert*
Sorry this has happened to you. I have been there many of times now. I had a cyst on 2 cycles which both were canceled. How much lupron are you taking? I have done 20u of lupron and that suppressed my ovaries too much so then on my next cycle they switched me to 10 u and from my current RE says is that the lupron ended up stimulating my ovaries enough to produce a cyst/follicle. They tried to do another cycle for me where I did BCP's and lupron and the same thing happened. Lupron is not my friend. Don't worry too much yet, I have seen lots of ladies have cysts and taking an additional week of Lupron has helped. Hope it works for you. Good luck!

Sorry about your situation, I am also doing my first IVF and I am afraid I may have one as well. I have heard sometimes it can be drained, ask about it!
Good luck and keep us posted.

I am sorry for all you have been through. It is definitely an emotional roller coaster. I am currently on 10 units of lupron.
I am doing acupuncture and she says she sees this a lot and it happens more often then the doctor's let on. She said I should avoid anything with raspberries and dairy because that feeds estrogen and the cyst. She said to eat more cauliflower, broccoli, and leafy greens-- these help absorb some of the estrogen. I don't know if I believe all of that will help but I am going to give it a try. It is just frustrating to think that this was maybe caused from being on all the different meds. I took Clomid in August, September and October, November I had a month off and then December started the pill. My poor body is confused. First it was over ovulating wit the clomid now they are stopping it with the lupron. Crazy!
Thank you for sharing and the words of encouragement.

*Ert* I was cancelled for having a cyst while being on Lupron. I am starting to notice that this is becoming something very common. Honestly i rather be on OCPs for a month or two and then starting stims.

They just aspirated my cyst and re-checked estrogen levels (which returned to normal in a day). Then we did the cycle. I even got pregnant that cycle. Basically a 2 day hold up, that is it.
Not sure why your clinic can not do the same...

I have heard of some clinics asperating the cyst. That was never offered to me, don't know why. ERT eat your broccoli and califlower and whatever you can and I will be keeping my fingers crossed that your cyst will be smaller next u/s.
Wow! This is pretty interesting to read. I am a previous egg donor, and used Lupron might first cyle donating. On the last cycle I donated they found an ovarian cyst. I have had it removed, and tested to see if it came back, and I got a negative. Now I am starting to wonder if Lupron is what caused it.
Oh and for what its worth, I know from before I did IVF, I would have cyst lingering around on my ovaries.
When I started my first round I knew I had a cyst (before taking lupron). The cyst was seen and they were hoping it would resolve, when it did not the removed it.
Now since then and after 4 IVFs I have never had another cyst, so for me, I seem to have less issues .... but who knows. I was told some of us are cyst makers and some are not. I would ask about removing it.

I am going through the same thing as you. I started Lupron on the 5th but during my U/S they found a cyst on my left ovary. They want to check me again on the 15th or 16th to see if the cyst has gone down and if not, I'll be on Lupron one more week with another U/S after that, and if it still isn't gone, we have to cancel this cycle. My RE never even suggested removing the cyst. My body is prone to produce cysts. I've even had a few cysts rupture on my ovaries. Let me tell you, IT HURTS! I recently had a mamogram and was told that both breasts also have a couple of cysts in them. So, Lupron will probably not be my friend, but we'll see. All I can do is pray that when I go in next week the cyst is gone.
I pray the same for you as well.
I pray that both of our cycles get to continue as planned!!!

I understand your frustration. I had 2 cycles cancelled due to cysts but it appeared to be due to the bcps. Once I stopped taking those I was fine. I had success w/an estrogen priming protocol.
As Lynniecat says, they can be aspirated. I don't know why they don't offer to do that.
Well I had a cyst myself when I did an ultrasound before starting this cycle which I have had for the past year. When a injection called deca on day 2 of period was given to me, the next USS was clear of any cyst...
My doctor did not say anything about asperating it. I will have to ask about that when I go back on Wednesday. It sounds like this is more common than I thought. Thanks for sharing all your stories. Even though it is upsetting for everyone who has had this problem it makes me feel better that I am not the only one.
