I was wondering if someone can give me idea about two things:
1. How often do one needs to go to doctor after the embryo is implanted? Does one need to be on medicine or injections for few months after the embryo is implanted? Is it possible that one can get the expensive surgical parts such as ER, fertilization and embryo impant done in some place e.g. India, and then follow up care will be covered by the medical insurance. My fear here is can you fly back to US with in weeks of implant and how does follow up care can be taken care of adequately. I will appreciate if someone can share there experience about post implant medication, care, flying after implant etc.
2. Does anyone has any experience with gender selection and how it works in US? Is it very expensive?
After IVF implantation, you will have to keep taking progesterone for a while - it was a couple months for us. Aside from that it's really about the same as a normal pregnancy. However, it's often considered "high risk" due to infertility factors or maternal age; that can mean additional monitoring. We certainly appreciated the early ultrsounds. I don't know what your insurance would cover if you did the IVF in India, but it should cover at least as much as it would for a normal pregnancy.
Some countries in Europe have national health insurance plans that limit IVF; people from those countries sometimes go to India for IVF, so I don't imagine flying would be a big deal. We were more worried about avoiding flying later in the pregnancy.
Gender selection is allowed in the U.S. to avoid transmission of sex linked genetic defects. I don't know the status for parental preference.
Do you or anyone here know that the progestrone injections that you need to be for few months after IVF can be easily given by my gyanecologist here in US?, even if I have got my IVF done in India? This is my biggest fear because I cannot afford to be in India for few months just to get the progestrone injections. I want to go and come back asap after the transplant is done.
Any experience or insight will highly appreciated.
With progestrone, there are 2 ways to take it--either in an injection or a suppository. The suppository is "self-administered" and usually done I think 3 times a day. The shots would need to given by someone just do to the location of where it needs to be done---anyone could probably do it. My dh administered them and they were usually done in the evening...
Pk80- My cousin did IVF in Isreal and flew back 2 weeks after implantation. Her American OBGYN and her Isreali dr communicated and her OBGYN was able to prescribe her any meds she needed after she returned. I dont know if it works the same with India but I hope this helps. Good luck- Jodi

I haven't done a ton of research, but have looked up ivf in other countries. If you do a google search for "ivf vacation" you will find a bunch of sites that help you coordinate ivf in other countries for a fraction of the US cost.

If you go with progesterone shots, they are are done every day and are normally done at home. I did them on my wife. You'll need your doctor to prescribe them, but I doubt there would be any issue with that.
