Day 3 or Day 5 Transfer

Post by *Ert* »

Hi,

Do you guys know how doctors decide if they are going to do a day 3 or day 5 transfer? I am having my transfer tomorrow and it will be on day 3. From the beginning my doctor said they try for day 5 because they see more success. We have 4 embryos and all are doing good right now. We will find out more specifics tomorrow. I was just wondering if they decided on a day 3 do they think they are not as strong or good?
I know both work because I have two friends who did a day 3 and got pregnant but their doctors only did day 3. Day 5 was not an option.

I think different clinics do different things.

I chose to wait until day 5 no matter what even if it means there will be nothing to transfer in the end.

My clinic's embryologist said many clinics transfer on day 3 if they think the embryos may not make it to day 5?

My clinics attitude appears to be that only the strongest will live to day 5 and by only transferring on day 5 they have had much better results.
They also say that the embryo is not better off in the women on day 3.

I am of course not 100% sure they are right but only time will really tell.

Good luck, if you have enough embryos I would request day 5 transfer.

You'll get all sorts of answers on this one and all kinds of opinions. While doing some research for my ET, I found this article which actually made a lot of sense to me.

Basically goes along with what Sisi says! Good luck!

The main reason they transfer embryos on day 3 is to avoid risk of loosing them, as not all survive till Day 5. So, this is good as Sisi mentioned, if you have few embryos. If you have more, go for Day 5. Ones that survive are very strong. Also, naturally, embryos end up in the uterus only by the 5th day - so 5 day embryo also ends up for MORE natural environment.... Shortly 5th day is much better, but you are facin risk of loosing embryos.

I agree with what has been said, and wanted to add that there's no guarantee anyway, I've 3 day five transfers of excellent quality embryos, and only 1 worked (this little baby girl that I am carrying!), so...you just never know.

Best wishes and lots of sticky baby dust for those little ones you just got inside your belly :)

My clinic will only do day five transfers if you have a lot of embryos. Since you have four, it won't be a hard decision as to which to put back.
Good luck!!
After 7 attempts (2 negatives/3 miscarriages), we have TWO miracle boys!! If you would like to hear our story, please visit http://www.ivfsuccessstories.info. Never give up, it can happen for you!!
