Can we get in trouble for giving away our leftover meds?

Post by lynniecat »

I know we can donate them to a clinic and I know people give their meds away directly to people on the board. I will do the same, but is it technically not legal???

I have lots of leftovers and they will likely expire... If something goes wrong with this current pg, I will use them, but once I get past the danger points, I want to help someone out!

I have offered some leftover meds (for free) and i have accepted leftover meds (for free). I have never bought and sold, and i do think thats illegal, but giving away something to help someone out.... well, not sure on the legal standpoint, but pretty sure its a nice thing to do :)

Don't ask, don't tell. I gave away some meds. I just used email's and PM's, so I tried not to broadcast the transaction. I will do it again if I have left over meds. It would be a shame if I threw away $1000 worth of drugs and some lady on here really needs it and paying out of pocket.

I believe that technically it isn't legal to do so. The route I went was to donate it to my clinic. Although I do understand why people like to give it away to the friends that they make on here.

I'm a Police Officer so I can tell you from a legal standpoint, yes it is illegal. It's called possession of prescription drugs without a prescription. I understand why people do it though considering how much these drugs cost. While you may be perscribed those particiliar drugs, unless those drugs have your name of the prescription it's illegal.

I too was told my clinic took donations of leftover meds, so I went that route with my few leftovers. I don't see how that's legal either though. They are taking my prescription & I assume giving it to someone else...

But what if they have a prescription? Instead of buying the drugs from a pharmacy, you are giving them the drugs for free and they have a valid prescription.

Here is an example... So say I take insulin, my sister takes the same kind for her diabetes. She somehow forgets to pick up her new prescription, needs the meds and the pharmacy is closed. We live in the same house and I loan her some of mine. Is that a crime? This is totally fictional as I do not use insulin do not have a sister. However, I can totally see this type of thing happening I once did forget my meds and I was dinner at a friend's house. She took the same meds and instead of me driving home, I just borrowed from her and then gave her back the same exact thing the next day. I mean maybe this is technically illegal?

I think it has more to do with you not having a license to distribute the meds than her having or not having a prescription. That is why we are giving our leftover meds to the doctor to give to someone who can use it.

Lynnie, there is no way in hell you will get in trouble for giving away some unused medication for ivf. They are not controlled meds like lortab, xanax etc. The police and district attorney's office have more real crime then they can handle. Nobody is going to have cyber cops lurking on ivf boards to bust people for giving away their left over ivf meds. AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!

Lynnie,

I understand what your saying, but let's say you are taking the same meds as someone else. You run out of your meds, like you said, and take so and so's bottle of meds and have them with you and you are pulled over for something or whatever. Technically, you could be charged for crime so to speak. I agree with Liam though, we aren't going to be on IVF message boards looking for people to bust.

Heh...yeah I agree. I am not worried about it, but was just wondering what the deal was. People help each other out all the time this way.

Its the people that sell the meds that I think are at more risk...
