Has anyone ever heard of someone getting after IVF in spite of severe male factor?

Hi Grandma,
They're not my circumstances, but I know that lots of girls on this site have experienced this issue, and had IVF, and have gotten pregnant.
I think ICSI is a preferred method for male factor issues, where the scientists actually inject a single sperm into the egg to increase the chance of fertilisation with a sperm selected to be "optimal".

I am in very simialr boat to your daughter. as has been said ICSI is pretty revolutionary and success rates with it are as high if not higher than with IVF?
May I ask - do you know what the problem is with you daughter partner? Do they have to extract sperm surgically? - with TESE?
Do you knwo WHY his count is low?

No, I dont know any one, who's pg despite of male factor, but maybe me and my dh will be the first.........Positive thinking!!!

Hi, Caz!
The problem is low count and low motility. They had icsi but the embryos did not implant. Eight out of 10 fertilized. Two embryos (1 8 cell, 1 7 cell) were transfered. One made it to day 5 and it has been frozen. They probably won't try again until summer 2005 when she has insurance and is out of school (she teaches) for the summer. They are also looking into adoption. Good luck to you.

hi grandma,

not sure whether this helps but we had some male factor issues; count and motility. there was no apparent reason causing this but the dr said it's was not uncommon. anyway my dh took natural supplements daily called saw paletto specifically for sperm quality/prostrate improvement, zinc and a male fertility supplement. he did this for 3 to 4 months and his levels improved to normal levels. i am pregnant - natural conception while inbetween ivf cycles.

if the male factor is due to a medical reason then supplements may not help, but they won't harm and in our case certainly helped my dh.

Hi,

my partner is sterile after chemo treatment, so we used semen which had been stored prior to his treatment. It was ok when it was frozen, but on defrosting it wasn't very mobile and weren't looking like swimming far, so the embriologist recommended ICSI, which we did and got 12 fertilisations, as luckily my eggs were good. The 2 best were put back and 6 others frozen. I am 19 weeks with twins now!

Well I think I maybe one of these very lucky people.

We had two attempts at ICSI in 2001 & 2002 and both were negative. We were told we'd never have kids naturally. I got pregnant naturally in Dec 2002 (unfortunately lost baby at 14 weeks) but I am now 17 weeks pregnant again naturally. Not really sure what must have happened in the meantime.

We both took folic acid, he took zinc and Vit C tablets, I lost weight, we cut down on alcohol, we used ovulation tests to optimise the right time and hey presto.

I don't want to give anyone false hope or go on about how lucky we are as that's not what people want to hear, but I hope that this sort of answers your question.
