April/May Treatment - 1st time IVF

Post by ikiban »

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and obviously very excited about this month's treatment.

Has anyone here taken Vibramycin (a tetracycline /antibiotics for mycoplasma) as part of their IVF treatment? This is not mandatory but highly recommended by my clinic. It is taken for 30 days and completed before embryo transfer.

Thanks.

yeah! someone doing their first IVF in April/May. Me too! if you want to hear my story, here is the blog I just start http://myfertilityexperience.blogspot.com/
since this is my first time, i can't really answer your question, except for my current protical. i just got my box of drugs in the mail and there was a prescription for Zithromyacin, an antibiotic, that I am supposed to take before the retrieval. I am assuming that this is the same. Hope this helps and hope I can be a buddy through your experience.

Thanks dixie_chop for replying. Yes, that must be a similar drug to mine. The anitbiotics are supposed to be completed before my retrieval so I started my antibiotics yesterday - my husband did as well. It's not mandatory and my DH didn't want to take something that wasn't necessary...but I figured that if it can help in any way, why not?

I will check out your blog. Let me know how things are moving along for you. Good luck to the both of us!

Oh btw, I have my injection class April 22nd (can't deal with going to the clinic each day for a needle) and starting Lupron on April 23rd. I noticed from your blog that you are starting just before me - how exciting!

Yes, right now I am just doing the birth control. They said I should start shots on the 20th. Egg retrieval on eithor May 8/11/12 depending on sono and implantation toward the end of that week. I can't wait to get moving on this. Have you gone through any other treatments before this? I am assuming not if you are just doing the injection class. I will say, the injections are much easier than I thought they would be. I would suggest doing them in abdomin if they give you that option. It seemed to be less painful and you could really pinch the skin there. I am sure everyone is different though, so you will just have to experiment.
did they put you on birth control?

Hi Lades,

I'm new to this post and we will start our first IVF these days ( waiting for Af to arrive to start with birth control)
I dont know about antibiotics. All I know that in preparation phase I have done(waiting for results these days) microbiological smears, Chlamydia Trachomatis smear, cervical smear, vaginal smear, mycoplasma and ureaplasma.
Does any of you done this in preparating? I already started to think what if these results came back positive ? This will delay all precedure and all I ask now is that everything is ok so I can start procedure....

Hi ladies,

thanks for posting your replies. I'm having some anxiety thinking about starting the procedure. Not afraid of the process but terrified of what happens after that. The thoguht of getting BFN or possible loss like I've read in other message boards is really making me nervous. I am very hopeful that all of us will have success with ivf.

Hi Dixie_chop:
Thanks for the advice. Injecting yourself on your abdomin seems to be painful...eeek. I think I might just try my arms or buttocks.

The clinic also suggested that we go on the birth control pill too but since both my tubes are damaged, I didn't see the need for it. I have to share that I was a little frazzled a few weeks ago. Of all the months that my period could've been irregular, it had to be the last one! I was late by 6 days which is very unusual so I called the clinic and they told me I should take the pill this month to regulate my period for my procedure. I didn't end up taking it because my family doctor was uncomfortable with the idea of taking the pill knowing I was having my ivf treatment this month.

FFZ:
my husband and I had blood tests for all of the possible infections that could affect the procedure. I also have to submit my helath history (last pap smear results) to get the process started - which is a bit of a pain since family doctors charge you ($95 for me) money for filling out half a page with only a handful of very straightforward questions. I hope your tests all come back without any problems. It's a emotional road still ahead of us.

I see that they are testing you for mycoplasma. I wasn't tested for that but my husband and I are taking 30-day antibiotics for this as insurance. I read the letter that was attached to our prescription that 50% of the general population carries. Apparently having mycoplasma does not prevent or lower the chance of you getting pregnant but there was a higher rate of pregnancy loss if you carried it. The antibiotics are not a mandatory treatment by my clinic but I thought that it couldn't hurt to take it.

Hello Ikiban,
Thanks a lot for your reply and for all helpful information. I will receive my results on tomorrow and Monday and praying for good. The process of using antibiotics sound logical to me ..
We do not have any insurance so we have to pay for all tests and IVF process from our own packet. I really pray that our first time will be positive for us, otherwise except of the desperation (I can not imagine it) we have to think how to find money for another procedure if needed.
Yesterday got me period and my clinic want to put me on birth control pill starting from my day 4 and then to call in the end of next week to schedule an appointment for ultrasound. So I will know more after my appointment how the procedure will go or when do I need to start with injection Lupron.
The reason why IVF patients have to take BCP (birth control pills) are for ovarian function tranquilization. I have heard that BFP in preparation phase is a common procedure almost in all cases, (I was surprised in the beginning too).
IKiban how far are you in cycle what is your next move…
Ladies, hoping to continue our forum and to share our own experiences through our long process of finalization of our dreams – to become mothers ….
I wish and pray for success for all of you

Hi FFZ,

Thank you for all the info about the BCP.

I have my injection class on April 22nd and then start Lupron on the 23rd. My clinic has prescribed Menopur and Repronex as FSH injections. There's so much you have to remember and so many steps!

Do you know much about baby aspirin and when to start taking them?

I'm sending you a bouquet of luck for success on your first try. Lets hope it'll take just one try for us to have our babies! :D IVF is insanely costly. I guess I am fortunate that both my tubes are blocked and will be funded for the basic treatment. My first shot at this will cost about $6500 instead of $11,000. My heart goes out to all the ladies who had/have to endure repeated treatments - not just the financial cost but the emotional roller coaster they are riding. They are so inspiring.

Hi Ikiban,

I also hope and pray for BFP this month, I want to beleive that this is our time....
I have read a lot about baby aspirin in IVF treatment , but in most of the cases baby aspirin is given if someone had misscarage before or failed IVF cycle. In some clinic baby aspirin is standard procedure , but not in the clinic that I go.
Have they told you to start with baby aspirin or not ?
My udpate-nothing much going on, tomorow I will start with BCP, on Monday I will have mostly of our blood results.
Have a nice weekend and keep in touch .....

FFZ,
Does your clinic not offer a shared risk option? my husband and I also have no insurance coverage toward fertility but our clinic (and many others around us) offer a program. if you check out my blog, it explains it in more detail, but the jist is that we pay $20k and we get up to 6attempts. that way if it doesn't work the first try or so we are left paying for every attempt. You should look into that with your clinic if it isn't to late already.
I wish you all luck. I start my injections monday!!! i have never wanted a weekend to go by fast.

Thanks for the good wishes. I am on day two of the injections and am feeling fine. A little bloated this morning but otherwise good. I just found out this morning that my husbands company is extending his trip in Africa and he won't be home till possibly after the ER and ET. His switch off person is having passport issues. Grrrh! I am so bummed out to hear this. I am hoping this other guy gets his act together and he can come home as planned. Its not fun to go through all this by yourself. Especially the first time around.
ikiban - how are you doing? you should be starting your injections soon.
Ins talk - the program i was describing is designed for people with no insurance. the only reason we got it was b.c the ins covered nothing. had they covered any of it, we wouldn't be eligible. so definitely ask them. what state do you live in? i am going out of shady grove fertility in MD.
