Negative BFN - what are you experiences next?

Post by Allie_NC »

I just got a BFN for my first IVF attempt today. It has been a sad day, but I am already anxious to find out next steps. My doctor set up an appointment to meet with me to discuss everything in 2 weeks but that seems like a lifetime away!

I am not able to get pregnant naturally because of a surgery my husband had when he was a teenager, leaving him with low sperm count. We have two frozen embryos from this cycle.

For those of you who have been through it more than once, did you doctor typically recommend using those or going through the whole process again and trying again with new eggs? My doctor at one point said that eggs don't fertilize as well when men have low sperm count, so I am nervous about using the ones we have frozen.

Thanks for the advice!

Allie_NC - I also had frosties left after my first IVF which was a BFN. First, you shouldn't be nervous about using them. They are already fertilized, and most RE's won't freeze embies that don't look pretty good to begin with. So they stand just as much of a chance as "fresh" ones.

Depending on how the first cycle went, the meeting with your doctor may feel anti-climactic and frustrating - like "I waited 2 (3,4!) weeks for THIS??" In my case, everything went fine the first time except that it didn't work. So my RE reviewed the process, re-affirmed that everything went right, and said sometimes they just don't know why. The second time was also a BFN. That time in my follow-up meeting he discussed how there was some difficulty doing that transfer because of a bend I have in my cervix, so before trying again I was scheduled for a procedure to correct that.

When you are ready to try again, your doctor will probably talk to you about doing a frozen embryo transfer (FET), usually once you have had a natural period after the one you will get now. This cycle is MUCH easier than the one you just did with a retrieval. Usually you start on a BCP, then just use lupron and hormone patches until the transfer date, then start on progesterone.

I hope this helps.
