My name is Akua and I am soo new to this. I am 39 amd DH is 36. We have several children between us but no biological children together. My oldest is a boy age 22 and I have a 14 yr. old daughter. DH has 3 boys ages 18, 12 and 8. We have always wanted a big family but time just got away from us and I spent the last 14 yrs taking care of my daughter who was diagnosed with Autism when she was 3. We have decided to do whatever was necessary to have more children and since my tubes are blocked, we decided to go the IVF route. So far I've had enough bloodwork to fill the nile, an HSN and a HSG (yesterday). Thursday we go to the clinic for the PCT. I was given Pre-natal pills, Folic Acid and Bio-System pills to take daily. Thursday me and DH go for the PCT and then on the 23 I am scheduled for am Endometrial Biopsy.
Admittedly I am very nervous. I was always very fertile as a young woman and now I'm reading all these stories about the down side of IVF and how women over 35 have such difficulty getting pregnant. More than anything I want more children and it's all DH can talk about. I have always been a natural earthy type who shunned modern technology and Western medicine and drugs. When I was feeling under the weather (which was rarely) I simply referred to my herbs and fasted. DH and I are vegan healthnuts and so now the thought of putting all this artificial chemicals and injections in my body and pills just scared the bejeezus outta me. But it's worth it. I just focus on the outcome. Can someone give me some answers as to how long it will be before I will start injections based on the fact that I'm still in the initial testing stage? And I will be 40 in September so what are my chances? I'm not familiar with the abbreviations and the lingo but I see some of you have used the term "BC" pills to give your body a rest or something to that effect (Downregging?). Does BC mean Birth Control pills? My DH says Im already Moody (like he isn't), so I hope that the start of these drugs don't make me want to choke him! Someone mentioned that they were taking 4 injections per day at some point.... ARE YOU BULL----ing ME!?!?!?
Also, can someone tell me how long a successful IVF treatment lasted from beginning to end? Like from the testing stage (where I am) to the transfer/insemination/PG test stage?
And are there any women on this board that have had 2, 3 or more babies from IVF (not all at once though)? I think I read somewhere online that a woman had 5 children all thru IVF. Can you do it that much without it causing serious harm to the body's natural functions? I would seriously consider having 2 or 3 babies thru IVF if possible. Ok, I have many more questions rolling around in my head but I will ask them as I go along. I give thanks to God that this forum is here and I have people to talk to about this. I look forward to hearing from everyone and if I eliminated any important info. about myself please feel free to ask!!
Akua - welcome aboard. This message board has lots of discussion areas. Just pop in and start reading and you will find lots of information and answers. As for abbrevations - there is a list that contains a lot in the General Forum - 3rd topic here's the link to page 3 which has a long list part way down the page (http://www.ivf-infertility.com/phpBB2/v ... c&start=30).
I tried to answer you other ones - my anwers are in all caps.
Does BC mean Birth Control pills? YES
My DH says Im already Moody (like he isn't), so I hope that the start of these drugs don't make me want to choke him! SOME DAYS YOU PROBABLY WILL. THESE DRUGS REALLY PLAY WITH YOUR HORMONES SOMETIMES
Someone mentioned that they were taking 4 injections per day at some point.... ARE YOU BULL----ing ME!?!?!? YES - IF YOU ARE LIKE ME - A LOW RESPONDER, YOU ARE ON HIGHER DOSES SO YOU CAN NOT DO IT ALL IN 1 INJECTION. DON'T WORRY THEY DON'T HURT.
Also, can someone tell me how long a successful IVF treatment lasted from beginning to end? Like from the testing stage (where I am) to the transfer/insemination/PG test stage? 2-3 MONTHS - DON'T REMEMBER ABOUT THE TESTING PART (THINK IT IS ABOUT 1 MONTH). BUT ONCE THAT IS OVER AND YOU HAVE YOUR BASELINE BLOOD WORK (BW) YOU WAIT FOR YOU NEXT PERIOD (AF). THEN YOU ARE ON BC FOR 2-4 WEEKS, THEN THE STIMULATION DRUGS 7-15 DAYS, THEN EGG RETRIVAL (ER), THEN DO THE EGG TRANSFER (ET) 3 OR 5 DAYS LATER. EXAMPLE: I FIGURE IF I GET MY PERIOD SATURDAY 4/18 I WILL HAVE EVERYTHING DONE BY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND.
And are there any women on this board that have had 2, 3 or more babies from IVF (not all at once though)? MULTIPLES ARE A RISK OF IVF. SINCE THEY ARE TRANSFERING MORE THEN 1 FERTILIZED EGG YOU CAN HAVE MORE THEN 1 IMPLANT AND HAVE MULTIPLES. MOST DR'S TRY AND KEEP THAT RISK TO A MINIMUM. THE NUMBER THEY PUT BACK DEPNEDS ON YOU AGE, PREVIOUS PG'S, QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF EGGS YOU GET FROM THE TREATMENT.
I think I read somewhere online that a woman had 5 children all thru IVF. Can you do it that much without it causing serious harm to the body's natural functions? IN MY OPINION (IMO) IT IS SAFE, OTHERWISE BY NOW THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN LOTS OF DOCUMENTED PROOF OTHERWISE. REMEMBER THEY HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 25 YEARS. PLUS FOR MOST OF US DOING IVF (ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE ANY CHILDREN) THE POSSIBLITY OF HAVING A BABY OUT WEIGH'S ANY POTENTIAL RISK INVOLVED.
I hope this helps. Just remember there a a lot of people on this board with a wealth of information.
Just pop in to say Hi and want to let you all know that I am still reading, I may not post every time I read, but you are all in my thoughts!
Akua,
Welcome on board! I am one of the lucky ones who got two live children from ivf, one is 2.5 month's son and the other is 2 yr old girl. I am sure you will get there soon given your experience and history.
Tracy,
Good luck and as you know already we need a lot of luck to go through the whole process!
Sabi,
Welcome and hope your ED is a perfect match with you!
Catharine,
I see your life is full of fun now. Are you still 100% breast feeding? I am asking b/c I wanted to quit, I don't like to pump since I have hard time to remember doing. I can relate the feeling of being ready to try ivf again. Basically, I waited as long as I possibly could due to the age pressure. DH was also more pragmatic than me and I started last ivf cycle without his knowing.
Tammy,
I read somewhere that you will start tmt next month? Good luck and do report your progress. Thinking of you, as always.
Rhonda,
Enjoy your pg and I am very happy for your progress. My nausea was only subsided after the second tri ended. Do your Drs do anything about your blood pressure? Dose drinking a lot help? Please take good care of yourself.
Everyone else,
Take care!

hi everyone,
Yasmina I drink a lot of water and other fluids so low blood pressure is not related to dehydration. the doctor says some women just have lower blood pressure while pregnant. As far as the hemoglobin being low, im now on iron supplements.
Tammy, I am due Sept. 1st. Boy is my belly big. looks like a basketball already at little over 5 months. I didn't even show til I was over five with my first two kids, however that was 20 and 14 years ago.
To the new people, I don't have too much advice to give on IVF because I only did it once. Couldn't afford to do it more. What is a miracle is that my ivf failed in novemeber, but i got pregnant naturally in December. Just one month later. no meds no nothing. And as far as the dreaded fsh number. mine was a ridiculors 18. They didn't give me much hope at all. RE said no hope with out ivf and only 5 percent chance with ivf and look at me now over 5 months pregant naturally. So don't always get discouraged with those numbers. I basically gave up and said its not meant to be and boom my baby girl is due sept 1st.
We finished the nursery in one week. DH painted, we bought the furniture and all the accessories and Isabella sophia's room is ready. Now all we need is her. I hate waiting til the last minute to do things so I wanted to get that done so I can realax and not be crazy at the last minute trying to do all of that.
Its getting harder and harder to work night shift i have trouble sleeping anyway and really do now that i get up at least 2 or three times to pee. ha ha.
I hope each and everyone of you are doing well. Good luck to all who are doing tmts right now and hope everyone that had little ones are doing well enjoying those miracles.

Sorry that I have not posted for awhile, but I've been very preoccupied.
I had to put my sick, eighteen year old cat down 1.5 weeks ago and it has been very difficult. My DS does not quite understand, as last night he waved goodnight to her. I asked him who he was waving to and he said "dat".
Rhonda: I love the name that you picked out for DD. It was a good idea to get the nursery all done and ready for DD.
Yasmina: Since I've been having such problems with my cycle, I decided to take progesterone supp. this cycle day 16 before starting the Femara. I have been having mid cycle spotting and cramping for awhile now and I'm sure that this is affecting my ability to get pregnant. I believe that my progesterone is low. When I had it checked it was 10.7. My OB said that it did not tell them anything. I read that a low progesterone can cause mid cycle spotting and heavy periods, so I'm going to try the vaginal progesterone. I will try the Femara during my early May cycle.
Welcome to Akua.
Hello to Tracy, Kat and Sabi.
Take care all,
Tammy

Please don't hesitate to post, just shout aloud, we are here to listen! I just want to let you know you are not alone!
Tammy,
I am sorry that you have to put your cat down and I am sorry that little Andrew has to say goodbye to her at this age. I am not sure how much little kids understand the meaning of short-term goodbye, long term goodbye, and permanent goodbye, already. It broke my heart when I saw that Eloise did understand so much of it. What happened was: She said goodbye to her daddy who was going to Turkey for a conference last Thursday. Then she cried in an way of telling me that “I feel so sad, but I don’t know what I can do” every night before bed since then because she misses him, she calls “ba ba” while crying. This morning, I had to take his place to take her to swim, she refused to go shower with me afterwards, because that was her moment with daddy. DH asked to see her through webcam, boy, what a huge mistake that was, she cried so hard when she saw her daddy on the screen, she had to wipe her tears away to see him, and she wave her hands in the air trying to touch him, which made both of us crying together with her… My DH had to disconnect after a while since he could not take it anymore…
Look what we got ourselves into? Little people with strong minds…
Rhonda,
I am so happy for your pg. I am sorry it is not as simple and you still have to worry about your bp. Hope closely monitoring is helping. Can't believe you got her nursery done already!!!

Sabi: I miss the posting too! I am going to start Femara this cycle starting around 5/10. I will have an ultrasound to monitor the number of follicles and I will use a trigger shoot. I also plan to see a new RE on 5/19. My old RE retired and this new one comes once a month to my Ob/Gyn's office. He works closely with my ob's office to do the monitoring of a cycle. When I used to see my old RE, I had to drive 1.5 hours one way to see him. It is just not feasible now with my 2 year old. I do not plan on doing another IVF, just some medicated cycles using Femara. I want to see what the RE says about my chances.
When are you proceeding with your next cycle?
Yasmina: Thanks for the kind words about my little Abbey. Your story about Eloise missing her daddy was very touching. I bet it broke his heart too. Is your DH back now?
Rhonda: How are you and DD doing? Is she letting you get some sleep? When I was pregnant, I only had problems with having to urinate in the middle of the night and that kept me from sleeping. That was only during the last trimester though.
Take care all,
Tammy

Tammy,
How fortunate that you have a son. I can see after 3 IVF's that you may have had enough. Did you pay out of pocket for all 3? Then I know why you are not continuing on that road. I took chlomid- I actuallly thought I may have been a wee bit pregnant due to very late period & middle of month spotting.- but who knows. My hormones are all over so you can't get a good read on ovulation & early preg urine tests. FSH level is high & I have very little good quality eggs in reserve. I had to go the donor route. I started bc pills May 1st. Go in for saline ultrasound on Weds & then they order meds for donor. They don't seem to think it's going to be a problem. So I think I am on my way. I have most of my med here at the house already. We get same day delivery. The needles are a little frightening. 3 months on prog yuk! Any fun plans this weekend?

First IVF cycle BFP!
Twins! Due March 8, 2010
Sabi: I am very fortunate to have my Andrew!! I had two fresh IVF cycles and one frozen one (two before getting pregnant w/Andrew and the
frozen cycle last Dec). Yes, all of our IVF's were out of pocket. We spent over $30,000 on fertility treatments.......ughhhh.
I had a recent FSH and estrogen test and had good results. My FSH was 8.9 and E2 was 29. I am going to try the Femara to see if it helps. I'm so glad to hear that you have started your cycle. How exciting!
The weather was so good here this weekend that we spent time with Andrew outdoors. We also took him to see his Nana and aunt and uncle
today. He is very social and loves interacting with people. When his Aunt Vicki asked Andrew if he was her boy................he shook his head no and pointed to me and said MOM!
Rhonda: I hope you are doing well.
Tracy: How are you doing? We have not heard from you for awhile.
Catharine: I hope DD is doing well.
Yasmina: How is DS sleeping these days?
Hello to anyone that I have missed.

Hi - sorry for not posting in awhile, been trying to stay busy and keep my mind off IVF (yeah right). I realized that this is a "lifestyle" that we live in for years - so why hide it. Others talk about what consumes their lives - kids, hobbies, etc - so I am in the "IVF phase" of my life and am sharing more. I have friends who are great and listen and try to help and because of that it is somewhat easier this time. Anyway, the good news is that the last 2 times I had 8 follics (4 each side). This time I have 13 (8 on the left, 5 on the right). Have NO idea where and why they decided to show up, but I hope they are ready to produce good mature eggs!! Started stims Sunday - so we are on our way. The ER/ET will be sometime next week - keep us in your prayers.
My apologies for not posting in awhile. I have been reading though
Sabi-great news, wishing you all the best.
Tammy-how's it going? how's that adorable DS of yours?
Rhonda-how ya doing? Glad you are getting a wee bit of relief from the ms.
Yasmina-what's the word?
Tracy-great news on follicle count, fingers crossed.
Hi to everyone else out there.
We're doing well. Just busy with activities and trying to find full time employment. Conflicted over weaning DD as well as starting to try for a sibling for her. Not to mention I just got my body back. Lots to ponder these days.
Thinking of everyone and wishing you well.
Sending out the PMA and the babydust.
