Hi girls,
I was at a restaurant last night and had a starter which I discovered had goat cheese in it (it was like a vegetarian pate so I thought it was safe!) and now I am all worked up about possible problems with bacteria affecting my babies! My stomach was upset as I came home so it all caem out (apologize for the detail) and maybe for the better, but I can keep the thought out of my head what if there has been some listeria in that cheese. i should have asked in advance but I still have not told my colleagues and there was a group of people visiting so I did not want to make a fuss by asking about all ingredients and just thought to order the vegetarian option that it would be ok! I feel so guilty and stupid and also tired of worrying about everything linked to the pregnancy. sometimes it seems like dangers lurk from every corner, maybe I've just become paranoid. Sorry to go on about it, just have been so worried all day.

Hi Juliana, I've only read that it is unpasturised cheeses that need to be avoided. Many cheeses are parturised so you, hopefully, needn't worry about that little bit of goat's cheese. You could always call the restaurant if you want to put your mind at rest but if you had an upset stomach afterwards there's probably nothing left to be concerned over.
yesterday my midwife said that only brie and camembert need to be avoided. as debra said the reaction was so fast that i doubt anything was left in you.
Try not to worry. I think its only the cheeses with mould cultures in them that have to be avoided, like the brie. Such a small amount wouldn't do any serious damage at this stage I'm sure.
BTW, I was feeling guilty the other day as i had a handful of peanuts! I'd also like to eat peanut butter but have read to avoid that as it could potentially cause future allergies, although i'm sure the risk would be tiny.

Poor you- I totally understand how you feel but are you listening? DON'T WORRY! The goats cheese might not have been unpastereurised anyway in this country but probably was. I ate some on a pizza by accident - sort of! Two weeks ago. You threw it all up anyway - the rest is pschosymatic!
Phew long word! You don't get effects for around 10 days anyway. I eat unpasteurised parmesan as most of the good stuff is and spent last pg in france for a week and kept eating unpasteurised cheese by mistake. They are being on the safe side. The french and italians don't stop eating it. There is a chance especially with blue cheeses you can get something but that is because our defence system in pg MAY be different but not very likely. I like my steak medium rare and still eat prawns! Not raw seafood though.
Please try and not worry - the worry is worse than the effects!
As for peanuts - I have peanut butter - love it - if you have any allergies in the family then best avoid it otherwise they say don't worry. I have been eating some revels with peanuts in too. Not had snickers though!
These things recently have got out of control I feel - put it this way if all this was causing major problems the European population especially the French would have died out - they still drink, smoke, eat their cheeses, oysters and mussels and raw steak and wash it down with foi gras and coffee by the gallon?
Get my point

Do you know if it's ok to eat smoked salmon?? I had some the other day cos I really fancied it then worried later that I shouldn't have eaten it.
Also can you have blue cheese spread if pasteurised and made with Stilton? i assume you can't but thought I'd check!!
Gosh I've got another 30 weeks of this worrying!!!

Just would like to say what everyone else said is right. It is only really the two types you have to avoid. I had to ask about McFlurrys the other day because you are not allowed soft whipped ice cream but the mananger was pg as well and she had been eating them so i felt ok about it.I wished i had asked sooner as i have not ate them until now and i am in mcdonald every week at least once.
Peanuts i try to avoid better safe than sorry with them as i don,t know all history on both sides. My dh ate my favourite chocs the other day as i could not eat them and they would of had been out of date by the time baby is due.

Smoked salmon is one of my vices - pg or not - had loads yesterday at my mums with prawns and avocado salad too - yummy!
No problem with it - the smoking kills off the bacteria.
And I am sure it's good for us - not sure about how good Mcflurry's are for the waist line Helen?!!!

Hi girls,
thanks for all the info and the encouragement, I was swamped with work after I posted and only managed to get back to normal yesterday, was just so dead tired! We had a group of people visting my university and I was responsible for their programme so hence the restaurant meals. I had another official dinner on Friday and this time i just asked about everything and changed a course when the meat seemed too rare. Anyway as Debra and others said I think it just went out quickly, even if it was unpasteurised goat cheese. I completely agree with you Tracey that if everything they tell us not to eat was so bad there would be no French (or many other European) people left! Dawn, I also love smoked salmon but have stopped eating it as there was some US study that came out a couple of month ago suggesting too high levels of cancer chemicals in farmed Scottish salmon. I really miss it though so I was planning to get some wild salmon as they said this had much lower levels of PCB (whatever these are). Helen, I did not know about peanuts! I've been eating them as a snack! We have no allergies in the family so I hope it will be ok. What's a girl to eat these days!
love to all,
juliana
The salmon thing i have had it two weekends in a row. Just cooked salmon not the smoked stuff (luv it with prawns but i was told not eat both, but now tracey says its ok i can have it now even just on its own on brown bread). Fish is about the only thing when out i feel like eating. Is there anything we are allowed to eat. I asked about the cheesecake yesterday it looked georgous but it was made with raw eggs typical.
Tracey i could eat McFlurrys till they come out of ears but i am trying to stay away from my local town so not to be tempted. It will be great in the summer though.

My friend ate peanut butter like it was going out of fashion when she was PG and it didn't affect her son. I think it's all precautionary with some of the advice written in books. I ate palma ham before finding out it's not cooked and should be avoided at all costs. I bet PG Italian women still eat it.
Don't work too hard.

Thanks for advice re Salmon!! My midwife told me not to eat McFlurry's as the machines aren't cleaned properly and could hold listeria. Luckily I don't really like ice cream that much!! Obviously I wouldn't eat raw eggs etc but I think a lot of what they say you can't eat is just a precaution. i bet they never had all of these do's and don'ts when our mums we're having us!
I'm 10 weeks today and my symptoms seem to have disappeared (apart from the tingly nipples) sorry tmi!! So I'm now worrying that everything is ok and have also got to wait 2 more weeks for 12 week scan. I think I'll be grey by the time this little one gets here.
I bought dh a book today called " A blokes guide to Pregnancy" it's written by a bloke aand based on the experiences of 100 first time dads. It's really funny but also really informative. It's really nice to read about pregnancy from a mans point of view.
Well I hope you all had a good weekend.

I wouldn't worry too much about the goat's cheese - they eat it all the time in France!! I spent 2 weeks in France last September and really struggled to find anything to eat since in the Dordogne it's all goat's cheese salads and foie gras!! (not that I like that anyway). I'm sure they just laugh at us in France - they're more concerned about eating salads cos of the risk of toxoplasmosis.
It gets ridiculous when eating out when you have to ask about everything - most of the time the waiters don't know what you're on about. I often ate home-made mayonnaise before realising that it would have been made with raw eggs!
I tried to buy some goats cheese in Tescos and it didn't say on the label whether it was pasteurised or not, which I thought was a bit off. The man from that section looked at me as though I was from another planet when I asked him to check whether it was suitable for pregnant women or not.
That said, I wouldn't get too hung up about the food thing. I think it's most important to avoid raw seafood (oysters, mussels), liver (including pate) and soft cheeses. I certainly ate cooked prawns, crab and smoked salmon whilst I was pregnant.
