how many embryos to plant?

Post by jmc »

so as not to be redundant for those who have read it, my background is on the IVF board at http://www.ivf-infertility.com/phpBB2/v ... php?t=2948

i am pretty much paralyzed with fear and shock that we are even at this point ... and now my Dr. and i are having a real fundamental difference with us on something i think is pretty major ... number to transfer ...

he says 2 ... its a good number and reduces the risk of multiples. as additional data points, i have 2 friends, one my age (38) and one younger (32 ish) and their drs. transferred 5 and 3 respectivally (all of us are in for male factor so nothing is wrong with the females). i am freaking out. it seems like the whole way, my dr. has been plodding along real conservative, and he is hell bent on not getting triplets. i am thinking "i havent been PG for more than 8 wks in the past 2 years ... i think the likelihood all 3 embs would stick is slim to none" ... i dont want to go through this to get nothing ... why wouldnt we be more aggressive? so much effort, so much drugs, so much burden ... if we're going to do all that why wouldnt we just GO FOR IT?? ... i am open to reduction if need be but i just cant imagine 3 would stick ... i dont want to do this twice ... i am freaking out here please help!

jmc.....I hope you have some posts from other US readers as, speaking from Norway, 2 is the absolute maximum and there's talk in quite a few places about reducing it to 1. Is your doctor only worried about multiple births or does he have other concerns? do you have the final word or does he?

Congratulations on being so close to tmt, you must be very excited.

love
Debra.

HI JMC-

My name is Regan and I am relatively close to you in the states, Delaware.
My story is pretty much the same as yours. OUr situation is a male factor too.
So to make a long story my Doctor would not put more than two eggs back, in anyone. There is a risk of multiples.
So if it makes you feel any better this was our first go at IVF, the Doctor put two back in, and I am now pregnant. I won't know how many took until next week, I will be 6 weeks by then.
So it sounds to me, if you are healthy, like me, you should have no problem getting pregnant. Although it depends on what the Male factor is.
If you don't mind me asking????
Sometime the sperm is just not strong or healthy enough to fertilize the eggs, or they just won't implant.
Anyway, good luck. I hope I helped!

wish you all the BEST!!!!

Hi,

God, I cant believe that in the STates they put 5 embryos back in...How scary is that......

In the UK it is now law to put a maximum of 2 due to the risk to babies and mothers with multiple births........
I dont want to put you off but there was an incident in the IK where a lady got pg with 8 babies! and decided to keep them all, sadly she lost all of them....(I personally dont agree with taking this risk, I am happy for 2 to go back in........Im sure with 3 is not that risky but higher than that would be no no for me)

Anyway, this is only my opinion so hope I have not offended anyone......
Good luck with whatever you decide and remember...It only takes 1

hi jmc, it is a difficult dilema and really you and dh are the important ones in making that decision. our decision was to have three put back with each ivf, actually i only had two viable embbies each time so we had no choice in the end. we would have had three transferred to increase our chances.

difficult decision but go with what you feel is right.

best wishes for the coming weeks.
