Need advice about bottle feeding!

Post by jennywit »

I need advice from all you mommies out there. I have a 5 1/2 week old son-who will be going to daycare at about 10 weeks or so. I am breastfeeding him. I have started to try to pump & give him bottles to get used to it-with NO luck!!!! He just spits every nipple right out. Any tips or advice on which bottles or nipples might work best? Any and all advice welcome!!!!! THANKS

I used Tommee Tippee bottles - don't know if you can get them where you are? but i breast fed and bottle fed and she took to both.
The 'baby whisperer' recommends the 'habermann feeder' (spelling?) as it is supposed to be most like the breast - I have not tried these but they always seem to work in her programmes but I think they are quite expensive?

Good luck x

hi Jenny!

How's it going with the bottle feeding? I actually went to a "going back to work/school class" with my lactation consultant and one of the things she recommended is buying the nipples with the wide base, that way the baby gets to open big like when they are breastfeeding. Do you have access to a lactation consultant or La Leche League group? they can be extremely helpful.

Hugs to you and your little one!

My little one took bottles when he was 8 weeks, I started with the Habberman which is very much like a nipple, then used born free and you can try the stage 1 nipple first. I would try also freshly pumped milk and try running the nipple under warm water first and have someone else give him the bottle. Good luck! He used to take the bottle fine then I stopped and now at 7 mos he refuses a bottle :(

Esperanza & riogirl-thank you BOTH for your tips-I am trying it all......I'll let you know how it goes-It's just so hard to hear him scream when I know I could just put him on my breast, and he will be o.k.-But I have to remember, when he's at daycare, I won't be able to do that. I will keep at it. Thanks Again! :D

We also found that the Born Free bottles ultimately worked best for us.

Two other things to keep in mind:

- The baby will take a bottle once she is hungry enough. It might involve 6 straight hours of crying at first - it did with us - but it will happen.

- I'm told that it takes a week for a baby to starve to death. So 6 hours will not come near to starving her.
