Success with IVF blastocyst transfer?

Post by Melinda37 »

Hi everyone - long story very very short:
I am 37 yrs old. I am unable to produce good quality eggs but I've been told by everyone that I can carry. My husband & I just had our first IVF transfer, (5/12) using donor eggs from a 24 yr old. 3 of the 14 fertilized eggs got to the blastocyst stage - so we transferred all 3. We were informed the next day that none of the others at the morula stage were viable; they all arrested their development. So now the 3 blastos in me are the only chance we've got at this (there's no way we can afford another donor cycle. . .)

I would really appreciate anyone's story on a good experience with blastocyst transfers - I need all the positivity I can get right now! Thanks!

From what I know, the blastocyst transfer is the best possible. Some eggs aren't strong enough to make it till that point, out of the mother, so they transfer them on day 3. But if you are lucky enough to have some strong ones and they can make it to blastycysts thats the best. Does that make sense?

Having some embryos to freeze is correlated with cycle success.

On the other hand, if you'd transferred two and froze the third, then you would be in the group with frozen extra embryos! A bit of a paradox there.

Short answer: Three blastocysts transferred in a donor cycle should give you a high chance of pregnancy, regardless of extra frozens. In fact, that's more than I would ever recommend in a donor cycle.

Hi

I had blasto in 2007 and three made it through - so we used one and froze the other two. As a result, I had a little boy in March 2008 with the first embryo and had a second one put in last week, so am hoping it will take - leaving one still in the freezer. I wish you all the best of luck and hope it works - now I need to go and find something to keep my mind of the waiting for the next ten days!
