Post by usmcwife14 »

Has anyone else been prescribed Metformin during a IVF cycle,I am insulin resistant. I just had a transfer yesterday and do not know if I should remain taking it. It really makes me sick. As anyone had success with it?

Hi usmcwife. I am currently on Metformin myself, also insulin resistant. I have been through 3 rounds (currently on the 4th) of IVF. The first round of IVF the metformin made me really sick. I could not take all that was prescribed. I was supposed to work my way up to 3 pills a day, but my Dr. said if I could only do the 2 that it was ok. I stayed on it after the procedure and after I got my BFP. After I m/c I stopped taking all of it. My Dr. said I could continue or stop if I wanted. The next cycle I took it the same way. After my BFN I stopped taking it again. Then the cycle after that I got up to 3 a day no problem, it no longer made me sick. I got my BFP that round and m/c again. I stopped taking it again. This time around same thing. I am up to 3 a day with no problems.
Good luck to you!!!

Thanks for your help Lesley. Metformin has made me really sick too, I've only been taking it twice a day, I just can't do three. Where are you in your cycle? And do you think the Metformin helped you get your Bfp? We have male factor infertility and I wondering if it is really worth it since it makes me sick?

For me, I have PSOC and the metformin is supposed to help with egg quality and control OHSS. I can't say if it helped the success or not, but getting pregnant 2 out of the 3 times, it didn't hurt anything.
Have you asked your Dr. if it's necessary? When I told my Dr. how sick it made me, he told me he would like for me to take the full dose, but said it was OK if I didn't.
Taking it doesn't phase me now, but I remember how sick it made me too, so I know how you're feeling.
We are actually looking to do ER the week of the first. This will be time #4. After the first 3 tries we changed Doctors. Under our new Dr we were accepted into a refund program where we paid a discount price and we get 6 tries (3 fresh and 3 frozen) If we don't bring home a baby, we get 70% of our money back. This will be try #1 under that program.
I hope your holding up OK in your 2ww, I know how stressful that can be! Is this your first time? When is your beta?
Take care, best of luck!
