Fertility Meds & Surgery

Post by NNF77 »

Hello all
Hope everyone is having a good day today!
I will tell my story later, but I wanted to see if anyone knows any information regarding my guestion.

Here goes: My husband and I have been TTC for almost 2 yrs now
and we've been undergoing fertility treatment, mostly for me,hubby is
fine. Anyway I have a herniated disk resulting from an auto accident
last August and I've been doing therapy and chiropractor appts since
then and still no change. I've been doing the fertility stuff at the same
time. Anyway, the neurosurgeon says I should have surgery on my
back because the herniated part,is quite large and is pretty severe
and is why I have alot of leg pain and back pain. The pain is usually relieved with massage,so I might go see a massage therapist soon.
So my guestion is this: Can I have surgery on my back while on GONAL F
and then have an egg retrieval weeks later or will the anesthesia allow the GONAL F not to work and make my eggs not mature?

I will ask the doctor, but I will call when his office is closed and talk
to him when he's not too busy. I'm just hoping someone out there would
know.
If it can't be done,we will have to put TTC off for just a month I hope

Now I'm going to go to a new forum and tell my story

hi nicole.

welcome to the board. i can't answer your question, sorry. i feel the the best person to answer would be your consultant. however from a practical point i think i maybe you should consider keeping the two seperate. once you start down regging you'll be having scans and sniffing maybe two times a day. some people have side effects to the gonal f, so not sure how you'll feel about that in post surgery recovery.

anyway, best of luck with both.

Hi Nicole,I agree with Phil and think you should really discuss the implications of surgery and post operative regime with your specialist.
I am a physiotherapist and know that any disc surgery is going to take a while to recover and healing time is very important.
Once you start on this ivf rollercoaster you need to be feeling as strong as possible both physically and emotionally,it can get quite tough and you will need all your strength.
Obviously you decide whether your up to it but back surgery is fairlly major and it will be such a relief to get rid of this horrible back and leg pain that I would concentrate on a full recovery and then embark on the ivf.
I hope this helps
regards Magnus (currently waiting to test on Friday following second attempt!)
