Has anyone ever heard of Epigenetics? When I heard PP posts about questioning your abilility to bond I remember reading a post on another thread about Epigenetics. I have cut and pasted some info regarding it.

If you google "epigenetics" you will find hours of reading. I just copied something that summarizes it.

I have bio children and now a DE child. I feel the same love for them all but it seems to be a stronger bond with DE child...I think because of the measures we had to take to have her or maybe because I'm older and look at things differently. She even resembles my sons in their baby pictures...maybe because Dr. Anna did such a good job in choosing a donor who looked just like me...who knows. The boys and our DE daughter have different fathers so that can't be the connection. I am very fascinated by this because I was fine with DE and didn't expect this connection. Both DH and donor have brown eyes and DD has blue just like mine and my sons.

"...there is some research that I find comforting as I move towards egg donation. The Birth Mother and the loving family is important. She provides more than just an incubator for someone else’s egg. Evidence is mounting that the birth mother’s womb will modify the way genes are expressed, and that these changes can be transmitted onto future generations. The way this happens is through phenomena known as epigenetics. While we have known that one parent contributes one set of genes and the other contributes the other for a long time, we now know that it doesn’t end with inheriting a gene. Over the past 10 years, scientists have determined that same gene or genes be expressed in a number of different ways depending on the environment. A gene can remain silent (unexpressed) or it could be expressed weakly, moderately or strongly. Epigenetics is dependent on different types of imprinting.

In a donor egg pregnancy, the pregnant woman’s womb becomes the environment. How her body supports her unborn child can alter the way the DNA is expressed. How her genes are expressed can alter the way the donor egg DNA works. This means the resulting baby would be different if were carried by the genetic mother. It is even more incredible that some of the changes in the DNA expression appear to be passed onto the child’s children! Ok, ok, I know that reading information regarding a World War II Nazi induced Dutch Hunger Winter or how mouse nutrition affect coat color doesn’t make for light reading, but it does mean that your body can change the way the fetus’s DNA functions and possibly how the genes are expressed in your grandchildren!

An easier to understand but less human example has been documented in horses and ponies. During horse IVF, it’s not uncommon to implant a pony embryo into the womb of a horse. The resulting foals are bigger than a pony embryo born to a pony. In this case, the foal’s genes are the same as a pony, but they take on the attributes more like the birthmother--a horse. Is this epigenetics? It could be.

Animal data suggest that the interactions after birth can change the gene expression from donor eggs. While I don’t view myself as rat, the data suggest that loving motherly care by the rat (a.k.a. licking), changes the way the pups' brains develop structurally and at gene expression level. The environment can change gene function!

This means that a child that results from DE transfer will have its genes determined by the egg and sperm donor, but how those genes reveal themselves will be modified by the birth mother after implantation and by the loving people the wee one meets after leaving the womb. And the kicker is that some of these changes could be transmitted to your grandchild! "

This will be my first experience with DE. I did have a momentary struggle with not using my own DNA but it was more thoughts as to "What if this child looks or acts nothing like me? What if the donor is ugly as sin  ? " I am now feelingvery comfortable with my decision and know that I will love this child as much as my other two.

Hope this helps,

Stef

Hi Carolyn - Hope the wait till your scan is bearable! It is hard, as now life pretty much becomes a series of 2WWs....Once things are established, you will find that the time does go by faster, at least it has for me. But, the fact that you are dog-tired is a good sign that your body is working OT -- sleep, rest, relax all that you can during this stage. It will get better in a matter of weeks. Are you also really hungry? I know I was just famished...

Hi Stef - my doctor talked to us a lot about epigenetics, and still brings it up every so often. It does give one a good feeling I think.

Sabi - how was your weekend? Tomorrow is your day! Thinking of you.

chriss - how are you feeling? when is your next scan?

to jenB, gigi, poohgirl, JDC and anyone I might have missed - wishing you all a great week ahead!

xx summer

Summer & Carolyn: How was your weekend? A bit nippy in Chautauqua this. Had a terrible headache from Friday at 3pm till Sat after midnight. Felt much better on Sunday. Gambled at Seneca Allegany Casino sat night, lost of course but had fun. Worked in the gardens a little bit Sun late afternoon.
How was your weekend? Very excited about tomorrow. Little scare today- my neighbor comes over we start talking & she says " you're probably wondering wants on my face...it's staph then says I probably shouldn't be here." I had to ask her to leave right away & called my doctor. He said just wash hands real good. I made no physical contact with her & touched nothing she touched. dh is going to sanitize the door knobs & couch when he gets home. Can you believe it? What in the world are people thinking sometimes. In the meantime I've been talking to her bf across the fence for about 30 min. yesterday. hello..... I just don't get it. They have no clue we are riding this IVF roller coaster, but still.
Mommies thank you for all the support & warm wishes. I didn't even poas. I can't believe it. I am praying hard & keeping everything crossed for tomorrow. The beta is at 6:45am. Please keep me in your thoughts. I'm keeping the faith! Take care of your little beans! Look for my BFP post tomorrow evening!!! Carolyn- having any morning sickness?

Go Sabi Go...

Ladies:

Insurance question: Our clinic says we have to pay $5,200 out of pocket for donor compensation and adm. fees and that it doesn't get submitted to insurance...in addition we pay the 90 percent deductable and all meds. Does this sound right to you all? We can't submit the ED compensation and administrative screening fees to insurance? We are paying close to 11,000 dollars including meds and we actually HAVE insurance that covers the process. Is this pretty average?

Really need your feedback. DH is not happy. This is our 3rd IVF try and last for sure. Our insurance company says all fees and services should at least be submitted.

Gigi,
That is typical. Our donor comp was 5k & then agency 3.5k. We had to pay ALL donors meds & procedures out of pocket. All our insurance co paid for was u/s & some meds w/co-pay. Varies greatly from state to state. We are in so far for 27K out of pocket! Hold on to your horses!!!! If you have specific quest's pm me & I'll give you my phone # & we can chat. It's gut wrenching isn't it?

sorry Gigi can't help - in Uk we don't have insurance that covers IVF - some people are lucky enough to get it funded by health service providing you meet very strict criteria - for the rest its all out of pocket so i feel the £ pain - hope someone else can answer your questions xx

All the best to you today, Sabi!! :D

Gigi - sorry, I can't help you with your insurance question as I'm also not living in the States. But, I'm not sure why you wouldn't try to submit absolutely everything, especially when you are pretty sure your insurance covers things like fees. At least it would be worth a try, wouldn't it? The worst they can say is, no that isn't covered. Then at least you know for sure. Can the clinic really dictate what you can and cannot submit to your insurance co? Hope you and DH get it all sorted out, and to your advantage! The $$ aspect of this process is really the worst!

Carolyn and chriss
- how are you girls feeling these days? The baby has its organ scan on Wednesday. Will be the first u/s without DH there, as the appt is right in the middle of the day. Do hope I have good news to report when he gets home tomorrow!

Big hello to jenB, kelly, JDC, stef, poohgirl and everyone reading,

Gigi - as far as the insurance stuff - It does vary state to state depending on the laws. I'm in NJ and have coverage also. Of course the donor compensation (8,000 at my clinic) is not covered - I'm using my sister so I don't have this cost. Also, all of the fda screenings and other screening labwork is not covered - this ran me about 3,500. As far as the meds - that will be coved for me. I would contact your insurance company and find out the laws of your state.

AFM - I've been somewhat of a lurker lately - patiently waiting! My sis and her hubby will be here next thursday for all of her tests at my clinic. Can't wait to see her!

Good Luck today Sabi!

HI Ladies;

Sabi: Thinking of you this morning. Email us when you can.
The cost of all this is disheartening. It doesn't matter if you take a baby home in the end...it's just the trials and tribulations leading up to it with the cost on top of it all. We are $19,000 out now and that is with partial insurance. It's all worth it for the final outcome.

JDC: Thanks for your feedback. That sister of yours is wonderful! Wish I had one for many reasons. A little over a week for your journey to take off for you.

Carolyn: I know we are blessed to have insurance to cover some of the costs. With my ds and his medical needs, we couldn't attempt this without it. You are right to remind me that partial coverage is a blessing.

Summer: That scan is quite exciting and a relief to get passed. You are not alone. We are all with you in spirit too. Hang in there.

DH says it is a go but wanted to hear from you all too. We were a bit surprised about the "admin costs/prescreening costs" in addition to donor compensation...since this donor was selected for someone else who backed out due to insurance issues too. Who gets all of this money? Hope this becomes a less costly experience for those trying in the future.
