I'm thinking on cancelling this whole IVF deal because I'm scared. I have nerve scaitica in my back. I'm told that if I become pregnant, I have to use those long 25g needles that contain progesterone oil for 12 weeks straight. I don't think I can handle that. Those needles are long. I also have to use that long needles for the HCG shot ...Should I just cancel? My doctor said that if I don't do the progesterone oil, it will lower my success rate.
the shots aren't bad at all . . . I iced my backside for about 5 minutes before, did the shot, massaged the area, and then sat on a heating pad for a few minutes . . . alternated back and forth every other day... minimal bruising and it never hurt at all . . . in fact, the PIO shots were less painful than the stims . . . I also heated the oil for a few minutes in the heating pad before injecting . . . made it go in a little faster . . . the 25 gauge needle may be long, but it doesn't hurt =)
I used 21 g needles which are thicker and longer. They has us draw up the prog in an 18g needle then switch the tip to 21. I even injected the 18g once be mistake. I also have sciatic and all kinds of hip/back issues.
I can tell you right now that is looks scary and freaked me out, but its really nothing. In fact when told I could use suppositories, I opted to stick with the needles, cause I think the suppositories are way worse. I did not use ice either. It honest did not hurt, not at all. I think pinch when the needle first went in, but the as soon as the skin was pieced, no pain. I even used my thigh for the trigger, which is "worse" than the hip.
So a 25g needle will really not bug you. Just have to get over it. Have someone else do the needle if you can't force yourself to inject. You will see. You will likely do a practice class for the injections. Once you do that first one, you will feel silly most likely that you almost canceled!
I seriously want to reassure you that is really truly not bad.

I had the biggest needle phobia ever and on first cycel DH did every single shot - first one I cried like a baby !! - 2nd attempt DH was working away and it was like if I want a baby need to overcome the fear and do it - believe me first time was horrendous but by end of cycel it was second nature ... you can do it - think the fear is much worse than the reality
I do my own progesterone injections and use 22G needles, which are bigger than the 25G. My DH used to do my injections but now travels so I was forced to. It doesn't hurt when I do it. I do ice for about 5 minutes prior to doing it and also I recommend doing it in the morning.
It is scary but after the first time, you will realize that it isn't that bad
I'm on my 19th PIO shot today and they have not been bad at all. I haven't even had to ice or heat the area. I draw up the need and my DH does the injections for me. I much prefer these to the Crinone gel which was messy and did not give me the confidence that I was getting enough progesterone to sustain the pregnancy. Keep the faith. The shots are really not a big deal.

I had the option of using the inserts or the PIO and I chose the shots. They really aren't that bad and I am one who hates needles when they are pointed @ me!
Good Luck and please don't give up!

Hi!
Same problem it was for me, it was horrible I was so sore! Then my Dr. said I could use the 1 inch instead of 11/2 inch needle being that I'm a petite person (120 lbs.) It was a PIECE OF CAKE, definetely recomend you to ask about it. Everything got to where it was supposed to go and it was not a problem at all!
Good Luck!
