Hi Ghost
Since I've had my BFN on June 29th I keep replaying everything and seeing if I could have done something differently then I thought of the actual transfer day - I had a very difficult one - different catherters and filling my bladder even more - but afterwards I remember laying for the 10 minutes they tell you to stay still I had to pee soooo bad I kept squeezing or trying to hold it the best I could I actually had to get up after only 8 minutes to go. but those uterine contractions i kept doing could have played a part in the embies not sticking right????
could they use a catherter if i asked so i wouldnt have to pee right away?
Hey there, I have been down the exact same road as you. On my first transfer, they had to use a catheter to add water to my bladder; however, since the catheter was already in there, they also drained my bladder immediately after the transfer. My clinic has you lay down for 45 minutes to an hour, and at that point, I still had to go to the bathroom very badly. For my two FET's, they didn't have to fill my bladder, but they did drain it after the procedure. Again though, I had to go to the bathroom immediately following my 45 minutes of laying still. I'm interested to see what ghost has to say on this. I have been lucky enough to get pregnant each time even with the bladder issues, but have not had any luck keeping the pregnancy full term. This is our last chance, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Baylorbear33-I am so sorry for your loses !! I admire your strength. Have they said as to why so many MC's? I hope this one works for you -
My clinic only has us lay down for 10 MINUTES ! Isnt that crazy?! I wanted to lay down for an hr and they don't let us.. I'm curious too to see Ghosts' response. I hate the fact we need a full bladder and for my FET I needed a full bladder too.. This Monday their giving me a Mock TRansfer to kinda see how and why it's always so difficult for me.
I wish they could just knock us out for it then we wouldnt need to pee or move ! LOL !!
I'm going to suggest that they use a catheter too...
thanks for chatting.
Bey...did you have a mock transfer before hand? I hope so! I had mine before hand so that when they did the real transfer it was ok. I still had issues with one of my transfers and although I rationally don't think that a tiny microscopy embie is gonna somehow make it out of the uterus...biologically and physically I think its unlikely, I still wonder about stuff like the lining being messed with during a transfer. Apparently your uterus has to be receptive and there is a window of receptivity and various things can change that receptivity. So if the catheter gets stuck and digs into the lining, stuff like that, it can affect the transfer. At least I read that, not sure if its true. I would not worry that much cause I think most our BFNs are due to the embryo having a problem to begin with and laying on the table 5, 15, or 45 minutes won't matter. Our clinic has us lay there 5 minutes and I still got pregnant multiple times...

First off, I'm not sure that bladder control involves uterine contractions. But I don't have a uterus, so what do I know?
Second, uterine contractions can be a problem if they move the embryo to an undesired place, like the tubes. It's not clear that happened here. If an ectopic had resulted, then we'd have a little supporting evidence.
Third, multiple studies have shown post-transfer bedrest to be irrelevant. We know it's not required in natural cycles.
Last, most IVF cycles fail. Sometimes we can discern a likely cause, like obviously lousy embryos. Most times we cannot. I suppose it's possible that your bladder control and your slightly abbreviated bedrest had something to do with it, but I don't see or know of any evidence to support that theory, so I tend to doubt it.
lynniecat- thank you ! You know doing these cycles and seeing those beautiful perfect embies and then knowing it didnt work you can't help to blame yourself. People get naturally pregnant all the time and they always say they dont know how it happens and here we are jumping thru hoops just for one embie to stick ! Well God knows I'm not giving up any time soon and I'll just keep praying that this will happen!
I am soooo happy for you- you must be sooo thrilled.
Can i ask what clinic you use?
Ghost- Thank you for your opinion - I guess we all have to be grateful that we even get the chance to do IVF - someday this will work for me I just know it....
and actually they scheduled a mock transfer for me on Monday - I'll be doing a fresh cycle in August . I hope this mock transfer actually helps. We'll see.

I always find it interesting how different clinics do different things. I have done 3 cycles (2 fresh and one FET) and they have ALWAYS had me empty my bladder before doing the transfer. My first fresh resulted in a BFP, the rest were BFN:(
Anyhow, my clinic also has me lay down for 10 minutes and that is it.
Any idea on why they want you guys to have a full bladder?
hrobinson- they tell me a full bladder helps lift and straighten out the path to the uterus. Its' extremely unconfortable though i hate it. and then while ur bladder is full you have the ultrasound tech pushing on your stomach hard with the thingy so the RE can see where she's putting the embies.. i almost wish they would knock me out for it so I stop moving..
We were told that the full bladder allows a better view of the uterus, which is otherwise obstructed by other internal materials (not sure what exactly - ligaments, organs, fatty tissues?). IN particular if someone is not a very slender person, it is that much more important to have a full bladder, as there can be a lot of material in the way between the external u/s probe and the uterus. As ETs are very delicate, they want to be able to see as much as possible.
My clinic's policy is: Empty bladder for retrieval and full bladder for transfer. My uterus is tilted so they really want mine full. They also have a 30 min. lying flat rule so I am about to bust by the time comes to leave! LOL!

My clinic also had me come with a full bladder for the transfer and lay for 30 min after. The nurse put a bed pan under me so I could go during the 30 min. I cna't imagine having made it without that.
I had my transfer today. The full bladder thing was horrible but as far as iknow it's to straighten out the womb. The transfer was a little tricky but my consultant was pleased with the results. My hospital have NO lying-down policy tho I am taking it very easy this weekend. Here's hoping...
