annoyed at cancellation of IVF

Post by becboo »

I have just been to the hospital for the 3rd scan and have been told that as I have too many follicles (53) to be precise!! they will have to cancel IVF treatment, as potential hyperstimulation when they give me the trigger drug. I understand that it has to be cancelled, I just wonder why they gave me so much menopur from the outset...
The Maximum 6 vials for 4 days before the first scan!

Thought was bit much at the time. My hormone levels are sky high..just guess had really relied on it, and after 2 failed cycles of IUI and one miscarriage, am kind of thinking someone is trying to tell me something.

Am going to try agan I think and hopefully they will get it right (amount of medication)...if anyone has been in a similar situation would be good to hear :?

hi

um yes 450 units a day...each powder/vial was 75 units so yes that is right... thought it was too much at the time. But was new to the process so didnt question it. 4 days without a scan seemed too much too.

Good luck on your ET next week :)

My first cycle wasn't canceled, but they definitely came very close to overstimulating. I'm kind of shocked at the amounts that they were having you take. You say they didn't cancel until the 3rd scan - did they at least have you reduce after the first scan? How many days apart were the scans? Also, were they doing bloodwork at the same time, or just doing ultrasounds to check on your ovaries? With my first cycle after I went in for my first round of testing they had me cut down my doses of both the hormones and come in the next day to get tested again, at which point they completely eliminated the follistim and cut down the repronex even further. The whole cycle they had me come in every day because of my rapid stimulation, whereas my last one I only went in every other day. By doing that kind of close monitoring and tweaking the doses they were able to keep me from overstimulating and save the cycle.

When you get ready to start a new cycle, first of all assess what kind of precautions your clinic was taking to make sure you didn't overstimulate. If you don't feel happy with it, maybe consider going to another doctor. Wherever you decide to go, NEVER BE AFRAID TO ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS. Question anything and everything the doctors and nurses tell you. If something seems totally wrong to you, there's a good chance that it really is. (Like the doctor who told us to "just keep trying" when my husband has no vas deferens.) Doctors and nurses make mistakes, instructions can be confusing, and there are so many different aspects of this process that are new and scary - like sticking needles in yourself! Undoubtedly there were times when I made myself a pain in the ass to some doctor, nurse, receptionist, or pharmacist over the course of the process. Oh, well.

In the meantime I hope you're feeling OK. Having that many follicles in there can't be comfortable. Are they still monitoring you to make sure that everything subsides properly?

I would definitely follow wondercat's advice and maybe seek another clinic/doctor. 450 units of menopur and that long between scans doesn't seem par for the course based on what I've seen around here. Granted, this is my 1st cycle. Hang in there hon. (((hugs)))

Thanks for your replies and advice

You are right. Next time I will be asking lots of questions and will refuse to let them give me anywhere near as high a dosage. I guess now they know how I will react, they will be better advised anyway.

I think too it could have been avoided if they had monitored me more closely. But hey what's done is done.

In answer to question wondercat, yes they did reduce me down to 2 vials a day once they realised had started to stimulate too much, but think too little too late. Know of another woman who had same happen to her. The hospital only offer scans every other day not every day, and yes they did blood counts with scans too

Even if the scans had been ok and working up to the actual ER, I had flu, so I think in reality it would have been cancelled anyway... Getting Better now so hopefully be better equipped for next time :)
