Giving your own IM injection

Post by sammycat »

Hi there,

My husband is leaving town 10 days prior to the end of my progesterone protocol. I have no one else to give me these shots and I'm going to try and give the shot to myself. Has anyone done this before and how did it go?

Thanks!

I have given the shots to myself. Only when I HAD to, but it can be done. I just go in the bathroom and look in the mirror. It seemed to go a lot slower than when my DH does it. It did not hurt worse or anything like that. Good luck with it, I'm sure it will go fine.
After 7 attempts (2 negatives/3 miscarriages), we have TWO miracle boys!! If you would like to hear our story, please visit http://www.ivfsuccessstories.info. Never give up, it can happen for you!!

I have given my PIO shot to myself a few times. I never in a million years thought that I would be able to give this shot to myself but it was a lot easier than I thought.

The toughest part for me was loading the medicine, my DH had always done that too. The rest is really just mental because the needle is so big. It's nice to have a mirror but not necessary. Just pick out your spot, clean it, take a deep breath and count to three and just push it in. Once you get the needle pushed into your skin you really don't feel it. The medicine is also a lot harder to actually push in to your skin because it's oil. I was really surprised by that.

I also recommend doing it on the right side if you're right handed and on the left side if you're left handed. It just seems to be easier.

I also really recommend practicing giving yourself a shot in front of your DH, that seemed to help me.

Good luck, you can do it!

When giving it to yourself have you guys given it in the thigh or side of the hip (gluteal)?

I will check out youtube now.....

sammycat I gave a lot to myself because of DH's work schedule. Youtube videos definitely helped!! I would start there. It took me about 2 hours to get the first needle in (literally...I was being a total baby :P ). Then I was down to an hour and eventually I could do it within a minute. My shots were always less painful than DH's shots at least. His schedule made it so that I could always do my right side. I'd be lost trying to do it on my left side.

Oh and always in the hip. I read negative reviews about doing it in the thigh. Looks easier but sounded painful.
