For anyone keeping your IVF activities underwraps

Post by pattieh »

We're pretty much at the end of our second cycle of IVF and it's been tricky keeping our IVF activities underwraps. With summer here, we have had to go to barbecues and had people staying over sometimes - so far no one has found out that we've been hiding needles and medicines or doing shots.

How are you managing to keep your IVF activities underwraps - do you bring syringes with you if you know that you're going to be coming home late?

I am going out for an all girls getaway two weekends away and will likely need to continue taking estrace and prometrium inserts. Not sure how I'm going to hide taking the pills from anyone during our dinner (the time I usually take them).

Pattie,

I was away a few weekends during meds applications (at one point I was taking them 8-10 times a day, all different pills and sprays), and, as for pills, I always had a full week's worth in my purse and would just excuse myself to go to the bathroom (or wherever else a little ways away) to quickly take them. People usually assume it is an advil or vitamin, and you can tell them that if they ask.

As far as needles and inserts, inserts can go with you in your purse - "bathroom time" again, and needles, although I did them all at home, I did have to arrive late at functions or leave briefly for a while, just to get them in at the right time - I figured it was worth the hassle. But, I think your safest bet if you are away is to have a big "bag" or purse with you, with everything sealed inside it and set up in a bathroom or stall. Sounds bad, but it may be the best way you get privacy. Or... you tell them you are not feeling well and need some private time in the bathroom.

Sorry, I can't helop any more. I didn't have to use all the needles many of the women on this board do, just the stims until ET.

Good luck!!

I too went on a vacation with the girls while doing shots. I had to keep them on ice also. I just kept a seperate bag with an ice pack in it and all my injection stuff and all my left over stuff too. I did them while in the bathroom "getting ready" or using the bathroom. I was so worried someone would find out but no one noticed anything. If anyone sees you with pills, just say advil, vitamin etc.

I agree with the other ladies... Don't limit your fun our outings just because of your cycle or medications. I have been on a few vacations while taking meds. I find the bathroom thing a great trick, gives you time to yourself and time to take your medicine. I went on a cruise taking medications and progesterone, you just have to find what's comfortable for you. There are only a select few that know what we are going through, everyone else are in the dark of the situation.

Well so much for keeping it underwraps. Found out yesterday that the our IVF transfer didn't have a positive result, so back at square one again.

The women who are going on this weekend spa getaway this weekend all have kids and I know that they're going to be talking about raising kids most of the time. They always do. I don't know how I'm going to cope. I feel so sad. And if they ask me why we don't have kids yet, I'll just explode.

Just hanging in there. Thanks for your support. Trying not to panic as my 40th birthday is approaching next year.
