Hi Little question, i'm from wales in the uk and my clinic informed me half way through the process that here in wales general anasthetic has now been stopped for egg collection and they give you a sedative instead. One problem pain relief drugs do not work on me and the sedative did nothing and i basically screamed and kicked the doctor all the way thorugh, but they did manage to get the folicals so they were very determined. However if i should have to go through the treatment again i was wondering if anyone new of i can get special permission to have a general or if there are much stronger drugs they can give me to ease the pain. I should explain i have had multiple operations for crohns disease and the only pain relief that has ever worked is morphine or epidurals or to knocked out all together.
Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry about you having so much pain! I enjoyed the relaxation after my first one and I'm about to undergo another in about a week. At my clinic they do not perform general anesthesia unless absolutely necessary. I received a combination of Versed (midazolam) and Diprivan (propofol - the drug that helped send Michael Jackson to the other side). In the correct doses they are very effective. I'm not sure what the equivalent would be in Wales. I performed conscious sedation on patients during procedures and in ICU for years and some patients are more difficult to sedate than others (as I would imagine you would take a little more meds and a little longer to find your "happy spot" because of your use of Morphine for the Crohn's.) My rule of thumb was always 'take your time. I can always give you more meds, but I can't take them away'. That seemed to work for me. Maybe you could suggest them starting the meds a little earlier and evaluating you to be sure that they are effective before they start the procedure. Some doctors do not like to do this simply because it delays their schedule, but there is no sense in you having so much difficulty. Again, I'm so sorry. I hope it works out better for you in the future.

omg.... I was cringing when I was reading your post... I'm so sorry you had to go through all that pain...it sounds terrible. IVF is stressful as it is..I don't think you should have to deal with all that extra pain and stress.
Did the clinic inform you as to why they stopped the general anesthesia in Wales?

I think the clinic does not do generals any more because the anesthetic council banned it in wales, i think that it has something to do with money as generals are very expensive and time consuming, but i think each person should be judged differently depending on their circumstances and if a general is required i think it ought to be available.
