Bleeding 6 days after transfer caused by progesterone???????

Post by nestles »

Hi everyone,
I was so excited after what seemed like a succesful IVF transfer (two quality blasts transfered day 5) and now I've lost all hope :( Has anyone else experienced heavy bleeding (bright red and watery - I go through 2 pads in an 8 hour period) 6 days post transfer? If so, did you get a BFP or BFN?
This bleeding has been going on for more than 24 hours now (no sign of slowing down).
I talked to my RN on day 6 and she tried to make me feel better saying that progesterone (I'm on Crinone suppositories - not shots, aspirin, folic acid, & dexamethasone) cause bleeding in many women and my bleeding is probably being made worse by the fact that I'm being treated for a yeast infection (identified on transfer day, meds started the day after transfer).
Everyone is telling me not to lose hope but I just can't imagine I could end up pregnant after all this heavy bleeding. I'm scheduled for a pregnancy test on Wednesday and I'm preparing for the worst.
I'm 31 heathy DH is 33 healthy. We have male factor / unexplained, TTC for 3 yrs, 3 failed IUI's 2008, 1st IVF Aug 2009

Bleeding can be so stressful! I am sorry you are going through it. With my son (born in March), I bled heavy and red after my beta. My numbers were strong, but I bled for over a week. He is here and healthy. This cycle, I had a 3 day transfer and started spotting. I heard on Thursday that I had a positive blood test, but a low HCG (25) and have been bleeding every time I wipe since then. I am not too confident about this working out, though I am still getting positive HPT, because of the low HCG number. Do not give up hope, this could go either way for you! I am hoping you have the same outcome I did with my son! Good luck!!!

sciteacher - I just want to encourage you. My 1st beta was 31, and I am now over 9 weeks pregnant. The baby had a strong HB of 170 at our last sono (about a week ago). There is hope for you my dear!!!!

Michelle,
Thanks so much for the response. The last couple days have been awful for me... Knowing someone else has experienced something similar and had a positive outcome gives me a little peace :) I talked to my RN this afternoon and she said that it is way too soon for this to be my period (I'm 8dpt). She still thinks that the progesterone is causing irritation that is making me bleed. On a happy note... my clinic had another woman last month who ended up pregnant after experiencing bleeding. Bad news is that since its a holiday weekend, there is no where I can go to get my numbers evaluated. I'll just have to wait until my first beta on Wednesday. She did say I could start testing at home as early as Monday (which I plan to do). I just want answers... even if the test is negative.
I'm so so sorry to hear that your HCG was lower than you'd hoped (I'm new to this so I'm not sure what numbers are good). I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that your numbers increase quickly. When do you test again? Don't give up hope!!

Hi Nestles,
I am glad that I was able to help a bit. My little man made me bleed forever and he is so perfect and so healthy! I am a bleeder. I am not sure why, but I bleed when I am pregnant.
Good luck with the HPT. I recommend First Response Early Detection - they pick up really low levels of HCG. Just make sure you get the early detection rather than the rapid result. I have also heard good things about the Dollar Store brand, but have never tried them. I am crossing all of my fingers and toes for you!!!! Please let me know how things work out for you!
I do not go in for another beta/HCG test until Tuesday. The holiday weekend got me as well! I am still getting positive HPT so we'll see. I'll let you know what happens.
Good luck!!!!!!

Nestles...I talked to my RE when I had spotting. She said they have patients with very heavy bleeding and still get a BFP. They didn't care what so ever that I had spotting, but I was near tears. She said sometimes you can get a scab from ER that will break open. Most of my spotting I noticed came after inserting a pregesterone. I would not be worried. But I know that is hard to say.
Just so you know I had a chemical with my attempt, but didn't bleed until 5 days after my first beta. So I agree with your RE, it would be too early for period anyway.

Did you take an anitbiodic for your ER? I always get a yeast infection from antibiodics and was so worried I would get one at this time since they put me on one for my ER. But I ate a ton of yogurt and luckily didn't. It may be your cause if they did. Watch for them and plan in the future.

Nestles...I agree with Lisa10-it is too early for your period so it can't be that. I have my beta on 9/9 and am spotting (very light) and like Lisa10 stated it appears to be after I use the progesterone suppositories. Are you using those? I had a chemical pregnancy with my first IVF attempt and started bleeding 1 day before my beta (and you are days from your beta). I have stayed away from HPT's b/c I feel that they can give you false hope. Try to stay positive and keep us posted.

I agree. I will NEVER do a HPT again. I got a postive but had a chemical. I spent days planning and thinking I was pregnant but in the end found out I was, but not really. As hard as it is, wait it out, because a HPT may not be right anyway!

Hi,
I sooo appreciate all your responses - thank you so much! After reading the posts here, I'm really torn about testing at home tomorrow. As much as everyone is telling me to stay positive, I've prepared myself for the worst. Although the bleeding slowed down today, it's been 5 days and the bleeding is pretty constant (not connected with the suppositories). If I get a positive or faint positive tomorrow, I'll be very hesitantly hopeful. If I get a negative, I won't be suprised at all. My biggest thing is that I want to find out something when I'm home with my husband (not on a 5 minute break at work which will happen on Wednesday after my first beta).

Lisa and fkm: I'm so sorry to hear about your chemicals, how soon did you find out? (Beta 1, Beta 2, later?)
Lisa: I did take an antibiotic and I'm feeling much better - Next time I'll eat tons of yogurt and drinking cranberry juice all along.

Sciteacher: I was so greatful for the test suggestion when I got to the store and saw all my options - thank you!

Michelle: I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and hoping that your 2nd beta has good results. Good luck!

Good luck! I am a HPT advocate as long as you know that they have limitations. I never take just one and I look for darkening lines. I also know that a positive just means that I am paper pregnant - it could still not work. I am like you, I'd rather be prepared!
Let us know how things go!

My numbers had not doubled by the second beta and with each loss I started bleeding by the time I had the second beta so I just new. I think the hpts help b/c you know what to expect before the first beta, however you also need to prepare for the worst. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Sciteacher77: Congrats on your beta what wonderful news. Are you still spotting/bleeding? The reason I ask is b/c I had a positive beta today 57, but am spotting which has gotten worse. I am devastated. Trying to remain hopeful but now that the spotting does not appear to let up I am losing hope. I have had 2 ++ betas in the past but they never double and it is an early loss. Any help/encouragement would help. Thanks

Hi FKM7783,

I am a bleeder when pregnant. On the day of my positive beta (25), I started heavily spotting. It got so bad that I thought it was my period. I had to wait until yesterday for my second beta (first was last Thursday) so I continued to take HPT to see if the lines got darker or lighter. They got darker. I bled heavily from Thursday to Sunday and the bleeding is almost gone now. I did the same with my son. Bleeding is not always bad. Keep me posted on you

:-) Michelle
