Am I too Fat????

Post by Anonymous »

Hi..

I am a bit embarrassed about this subject  but I would like to know if I am too fat to conceive. I know I am big but.. would this make my chances even more difficult? I am 33 and weigh 14stone ( I am only 5.4 tall).. I did loose some weight (2.5 stone in total) but I have put 1.5 stone on and now I am 14 stone!!! I tried my first IVF in May 2003 (negative) and I weighed 13 stone - now I am panicking that I will be too fat to conceive. I will start sniffing mid April (I guess that makes me a May buddy) and my drugs have been delivered today. I know that I only have myself to blame..but I promise that I did try to loose weight but somehow since my last treatment it has been impossible.

Has anybody managed to get a positive being overweight? If you do, I would love to hear from you!!! I do try to eat healthily.. but chinese and indian are my downfalls as well as wine!!!! Sometimes I get down and the only thing that cheers me up is a good meal!!!

Anyway... I have been reading all the posts.. and get so excited when I hear about positive results. Congratulations to all mums to be and good luck to everybody testing soon.

Hi Ursula

I was told that I was too large at 13 1/2 stone to qualify for NHS funded IUI so that really spurred me to lose weight and I got down to the required 12 stone (BMI of less than 30 was the requirement). Unfortunately they then changed the eligibility rules and we didn't qualify anyway so we moved on to privately funded IVF.

So I was 12 stone and still overweight when we had IVF. We were lucky and our treatment worked first time. So yes it can work when you're overweight.

Good luck with everything.

Hi Ursula,

weight....a subject very close to my heart!!
I knew I had to lose weight before undergoing IVF but i was huge. I was 17 stone and only 5ft1" !! Also i had mildly polycystic ovaries which was somewhat down to weight and wouldn't have helped my chances of conception. I lost weight and got down to 9 and a half- ish stone before i went for my consultation. When i was going through the treatment i went back to my usual bad habits of snacking and plenty of junk food to console me for having to go through the scans and injections. The day of egg collection i was weighed so they knew how much to anaesthasise(sp!) me and i was 11.11 , so very much still overweight for my height. As i am 3 " shorter than you we were probably the same degree overweight at the start of IVF. But.... It worked for me and i got a BFP!
So, don't worry too much. If you get pregnant you will put on weight anyway. If you are the average size 16 then i don't think you need worry too much unless the consultant makes it clear he thinks it may be a contributary factor.

good luck, keep us posted,
helen

Thank you so much for replying to my post.

Jules, Congratulations on your pregnancy!!! What is IUI? I have read about it in the posts but don't know exactly what it is. Sorry for being so ignorant. I am having ICSI.

Helen, What an achievement, you lost over 7 stone... well done.. you must be so proud of yourself and now you are expecting.. are you expecting twins? What diet did you do? I am in slimming world and I find them very good.

****
Well, I spoke to my nurse and although she didn't say that they won't treat me, they will prefer to treat somebody with a BMI of less than 30, so I have to loose 1.5 stone. We have decided to wait until I loose the weight (so I won't be a May buddy after all). My dh is very dissapointed and I can't stop myself from thinking I am a failure but my lovely nurse said that maybe unconciously I am not loosing the weight as we know this is the last try under the NHS funding and maybe we see it as the end of the road for us.

Thanks so much for your replies.. congratulations again to you both on your pregnancies and I will continue to read your progress.. keep us updated.

Take care

Ursula

Hi Ursula

IUI is intrauterine insemination (I think). As I understand it, you take the same sort of drugs to stimulate your ovaries as in IVF but they just insert the sperm into you, rather than removing the eggs and fertilising them separately.

We ended up having ICSI because our problem is male factor and so our consultant said that IUI wouldn't work. Our ICSI was nearly 3 years ago now and the resulting twins were two years old a fortnight ago. So like Helen we were doubly lucky. I'm now lighter than I was then (having twins is the best diet I've ever been on) but still slightly overweight so it'll be interesting to see what happens when we try ICSI again (hopefully later in the year).

Good luck with the weight loss and try not to let it get you down.

I'm afraid I did one of those short term crash diets that nobody should recommend. But, it worked for me and was the best thing i ever did, as i'm sure i would still be struggling to lose weight now instead of sitting here with a 21 week twin baby belly instead!

Our problem was also male factor so we were recommended ICSI straight away.
Good luck with the diet.

Hi Ursula

I am also 5ft 4 and have been told to lost weight. I am currently 15st 12 and have been told to get down to 13 stone ( which they say will be in the BMI range for my height). We are getting NHS funding at the Clarendon Wing in Leeds and come to the top of the waiting list in November. I've already lost a stone and half and am persevering by joining ww.

Good luck with your weight loss....

Hi Ursula

I'm also overweight (or OBESE according to charts) I am only 5ft 2 and weigh 13 stone   makes me shudder everytime I think about it. To do IVF your BMI has to be 30 or under, so I am now permanantly on a diet! I have PCOS and an under active thyroid problem, which really doesn't help (it's no excuse I know) but my weight flutters up and down like a yo yo. I've lost hald a stone but would love to loose 2-3 stone more; apparently for my height I should be 8 and a half stone HA is all I can say.

I wish you all the best with your diet and keep your chin up.
