How many cycles of IVF should I purchase?

Post by MomOfOne »

Hello Everyone:
I'm new to the forum and would appreciate your advice. I am 32 years old, a mother of a 5 yr old son, and have been trying to conceive for the past 3 yrs or so. I've had 1 blighted ovum and 1 chemical pregnancy. We've tried Clomid and timed intercourse for a few cycles but it didn't work. We tried IUI once and that didn't work (dr. said I ovulated prior to insemination).

Now we have decided to try IVF but how many cycles would you suggest? 1 IVF is 6995.00. The 2 cycle IVF is 9995.00. No refunds if we get pregnant with 1 cycle. Since it's been so difficult, I'm not optimistic about 1st try success but would hate to pay the extra 3000.00 to not need it.

What do you guys think? Oh, I guess I should add that we are in the category of "unexplained infertility." Nothing physically wrong with me or my husband.

Please help me decide. I have a week to make up my mind.

Thanks!

statistically it takes about 2.2 tries to get pregnant but it all depends on your doctors advise. I got the 2x package and got pregnant the first time. For me it is not wasted money I am just happy it worked out the first time.
You have to think about if it doesn't work the first time do you want have and want to spent the $6k again. :-)

I asked the financial consultant at our clinic and she said that most couples take either a 2x or 3x package

Hope that helps a bit

Wow. That is cheap either way you slice it. One cycle for me was over $10,000 plus meds. I say go for 2, it will ease your mind.

I'd say go for 2. Hopefully you'll get pregnant on your first try! However, on the first try, they have no reference point for the meds they give you. And if you don't respond so well (not many eggs/embryos), they have a good idea how to adjust the meds for the 2nd try to give you the most optimal results. So sometimes the first try is a 'baseline', and the 2nd try produces better results. That is what happened for me. The 2nd try produced the best result of all- my baby :).

Good luck!

I say go for 2 also. The prices are very cheap indeed! Usually one IVF cycle is well over $10K with meds. I'm assuming the costs you listed don't include meds. Good luck! Also, as the company from whom you are buying the package what is the lastest date that you can change your mind about the package that you purchased? Usually you can change it prior to ER. If you buy one and don't get the feeling the cycle is going well, you could potentially upgrade to 2. But if I were you, I'd just get 2! Peace of mind goes a long way during this process. Good luck!

Go for 2 cycles. I already have a DD from clomid and for 2 years TTC so I went to IVF. I thought since I already had a child that I would have success @ IVF 1st cycle. How wrong was I !!!!! My first IVF cycle failed with 2 blastocysts everything went good. I was told that more cycles IVF fail than succeed. I also had some issues with the meds not agreeing with me or not working for me @ all. I just did my FET today. I've been doing IVF journey since march, I never thought I would still be doing this so long. You don't need the added pressure if it fails having to put out more money again and dealing with the results of a failed cycle. Just my opinion but a little more money out won't matter when your holding a baby in your arms. :D

I'm with everyone else.... buy the two up front. That way you won't feel like you've got all your eggs in one basket (no pun intended). The "insurance" of a second try will ease your mind A LOT. I bought 3 fresh cycles up front and just got a BFN after two perfect embies were transferred. I'm sooo glad I did it that way up front. There's no question of what to do next. With my deal... I get to use any frozens for free between the fresh cycles. Is your clinic that way? If so, then definitely go for two... that could mean 4 transfers.

Also, if you buy the package deal, it's to the clinic's best interest for you to have a BFP on the first try. They'll pull out all the stops and you'll get great care. Not that you'd get poor care otherwise, but think if it like VIP. I would talk to the staff about getting you samples for the stim meds. They have them! That could literally save you THOUSANDS.

Good luck!

If I was in your shoes, I will buy 2 cycles since the 2nd one has a huge discount. Also, it will give you a peace of mind. d

I only purchased 1 cycle with my clinic since they only give me 10% discount if I bought 2. My single cycle cost is double yours and it is a hugh sum of $ upfront if I bought 2. so......

Definitly I vote for 2 in your case.

Hi
I would also suggest you but 2 cycles for peace of mind. In my country we don't get an option for discounts or package deals which I think it's unfair. One cycle incuding meds & blood work is going to cost around USD 8K but would bless every single penny if God willing it will be successful.

Best wished & sticky baby dust to all,

Thank you so much ladies for all your replies. I really appreciate the advice. I will definitely purchase the 2 cycle just for peace of mind....just hope it will work on first try. The meds are not included in the cycle prices. Are the meds that expensive. I'm in southern California and they are referring me to the pharmacy MDR. Does anyone know a less expensive pharmacy?

Thanks again!

There are many discount online pharmacies. Try to search threads on here. People have listed them before, too late for me though. With insurance coverage for my meds, I still paid $2,000. They said the insurance paid $5,000. So find whatever discount you can. Also ask you clinic for freebies. They get samples and donations, so they may be able to provide you with some.

Meds are expensive.

Important: If your clinic has worked out best pricing in advance, make sure the price you get is that promised pricing.
Avoid IVF and surrogacy in Ukraine. Ukrainian centers pay shills to post here under numerous sock accounts pretending to be patients in Ukraine. Centers using such deceptive advertising cannot be trusted and should be avoided.
