Was at the hospital today for a meeting with the consultant and am set to do a FET in August. We have 8 frosties, 3 from last year and 5 from this year. I was thinking along the lines of 3 more attempts at IVF but the consultant today told me they would prefer if I thawed 4 at a time with a view to putting the 2 best quality survivors back in. Seemingly the research they have done on this seems to give a higher success rate this way. Has anyone else heard anything like this or have any thoughts.
I have to say that after 5 unsuccessful attempts so far and our decision never to do another full cycle its all coming to the end and my initial thoughts are to follow their advice. I suppose its one of these things that whatever we decide if it doesn't work then you are bound to wish you went for the other option
Hi, Wendy....we found ourselves in a similar situation at the start of 2004 with 4 frosties and having made the decision to call it a day after the last of them had been used. We expected to only get one go, ie. they'd defrost all 4 and choose the best 2 but were in fact told they could defrost each pair, check their quality/survival rate and if necessary, defrost another 2 in time for my treatment. As it turned out, we got 2 survivors both times so had 2 further FETS this year. Neither worked, but that's another story.
I hope the above makes sense and helps just a little!
good luck
love
Debra.
Dear Wendy ,
I dont know if this will help but we had defrost decisions to make after my first cycle was stopped short of ET because of overstim. Thye did a freeze all and then when we were ready for FET they wanted us to defrost 5 then 5 then 4 in 3 seperate FET cycles( we had 14) they said this would help ensure that we got 2 decent embryos for transfer as a % are lost during thawing. We pushed to try the smaller batch first and 100% survived (so obviously 2 gooduns had to be discarded.) We then , based on our first experience argued to only defrost 4 and not 5 ( they werent keen because of thaw loss rates but agreed. The last 2 batches were 3 and 3 and again all survived thawing!! It was only later on that an embryologist said that they tend to survive thawi ng better when frozen before they didvide in the first place (as they do in a freeze all) The thaw statistics we were intitially quoted were too general. Any road up the idea of defrosting 2 and then 2 more if necessary sounds logical but was not offered as an option to us at our clinic. I suppose Im saying that you need to check that the advice you get applies to your personal circumstances!! In my case I got +ves the last two goes( which also seems to defy statistics!!)I unfortunately mc both times but this may be due to my blood ( im on the aspirin now)
Good luck with it all
love Annie
Hi,
I just found out yesterday that my clinic has thawed them in 3's. I had 6 frozen in Feb. They will then thaw 3 at a time. I was told that two thirds survive the thaw. Not sure this helps. To tell you the truth I've got a downer on clinics at the moment. I wasn't even given the option of how many were to be frozen together. I suppose I was naive and just thought they would freeze them in two's and therefore I would have a max of 3 FET's. No such luck.
