1st IVF FAIL, #2 what to do different?

We just went through our first IVF (fresh cycle) with a BFN. We did ICSI with that one thinking that we were doing everything we could have done, but found out that doing so, that damages the egg and that is the reason why it didnt implant.
We are thinking of going again and not doing the ICSI, but i have reservations about it. Will the sperm penetrate the egg themselves? We have never had a successful pregnancy so this concerns me.

We had 14 mature eggs out of 19 total, only 5 were fertilized. (we did a 5 day transfer and all were excellent condition, however only 2 of those survived.) those 2 were transferred. none stuck.

So, what can i do differently, or is there anything?

oh, and how come NO ONE tells you about the freakin horrible AF that you get after you get a BFN! Holy Cow!

I am just nervous about doing this again, and so soon again, we jut got our BFN last week and thinking about doing it again in Jan.

Nobody knows why a given transferred embryo did not implant. There are many possible reasons.

Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, especially with male factor. Sometimes two or more enter the egg, and it's ruined. If conventional fertilization fails, they can try "rescue" ICSI, but by then it's late and less than optimal. Eggs are best fertilized at a specific time.

There are many protocols, with too many variations to list. I don't see why ICSI would be considered the cause of your failure.

It's probably the thickest endometrium you've ever had, caused by all the estradiol that results from stimulation.

I am just nervous about doing this again, and so soon again, we jut got our BFN last week and thinking about doing it again in Jan.

Soo Sorry to hear about your BFN. Unfortunately with IVF no cycle is guaranteed. My first IFV was a fresh cycle with ICSI and it was a BFN. My RE says only 1 in 4 embryo's will end in birth of a baby. It doesnt make a BFN any easier though!

I totally agree with you on the horrible AF! Nobody warned me either and it was the worst I have ever had. Good news is that when you get your BFP you will get a nine month break!

Our 1st IVF ended in a BFN as well. It sucked. But I knew we weren't 100% assured it would be successful.

Anyway, we made no changes to the protocol for our 2nd IVF. We ended up what seemed to be an identical cycle as the 1st one. But this time, it resulted in a BFP.

Anderjam - I am in a similar situtation. our first IVF/ICSI resulted in BFN... thought getting ICSI done was the solution for us but the embies did not stick

who knows why... now waiting for AF, and can feel already its going to be a bad one...
DillysGirl - may i ask you how soon you did your FET after BFN? what did it involve? everyone says FET is much less stressful...

hi 2010 - i am doing an FET cycle right now after our BFN from our first IVF cycle. the protocol is very light and much less stressful. after AF i got on estrace 3x a day, then will have an u/s and b/w mid cycle, and if i have not ovulated i ll start progesterone (inserts, not PIO) and that's pretty much it. i read that some girls go on lupron too but it's not in my protocol (not sure why). the RE said there is a very very slight chance of ovulating despite the estrace so there is a risk of having to postpone the cylce if i did, and then i guess there is also a risk of the snow babies not surviving thaw (but our RE told us the thaw rate of blast was close to 100% so we are not too worried about that). it definitely does not have the stress level (or the hormonal swings) of a full blown cycle. when are you thinking of starting?

2010- I started my FET right after my BFN, (BCP with that first evil AF). I was on a mission and did not want or need a break! Protocol was BCP, Lupron, Vivelle Patches, and PIO. Basically all you are doing is building your lining, which is waaaay easier on the body. I think my clinic gives a 80% thaw rate on frozen embies. I ended up having to thaw three to get two to transfer.
