Our beautiful little girl!!

Post by nicolam »

Dear All

It's taken me a week to get a chance to let you all know that on Easter Sunday, 5am I gave birth to Thea Victoria - so only 2 days late thankfully (her Dad was going away on the induction dateof the 19th, so I was so worried he'd miss it!) She is absolutely gorgeous, 6lb2oz.

I'm happy to say that the birth was very straight forward and I know how lucky I was after reading some of the things some of you had to do!

Started to get mild period period pains on Friday morning, roughly 20mins apart. A little brown bleed in the afternoon, but nothing major. Sat, the period pains were a little more regular and a bit stronger, then I got the 'show' - though it wasn't 'pink' as I'd read, which worried me, it was brown/red with clear mucus - (more like raw egg white actually!) I'm being graphic here, because it's funny, I realised I hadn't really done a lot of homework of what to expect. Anyhow, I got another two 'shows' which worried us so we rang the hospital and they told me to come in. Went in at 6pm expecting to be sent home again, but I'd dilated 2cms so i stayed. We were a bit shocked. Spent the next 4 hours pacing around the room with the period pains getting stronger and every five minutes. Eventually I'd had enough standing up and got on the bed and had a go on the gas which was good, but by 11.30 I asked for pethidine. Managed to sleep a few hours and then hit the panic button around 3pm when the pains got strong and I felt like pushing. It's all a bit of a blur to be honest, but I remember asking for an epidural but they said it was too late as I'd gone too far, so with the remains of pethidine and gas and air I delivered her. The feeling to push is amazingly strong and I remember just thinking that I was going to push with all my might to get her out whatever the pain. The time of 'established' labour was 11 hours apparently.

If it gives any of you a bit of a lift, I have to say that it wasn't as bad as I thought I was going to be. Pethidine does make you feel spaced out though and the gas, but it really took the edge off the pain. I remember seeing her little face and big eyes looking around but just desperately wanted to sleep! So poor DH saw all the gory bits including the placenta which he didn't want to see! She was a bit affected by the pethidine so gave her the antidote just in case. Within a couple of hours (she went into observation for a bit), they brought her back and I woke to have her on me and she started breastfeeding straight away. Bloody marvellous.

Everything's so different at home, your time isn't your own! But I do hope to catch up on the posts during the next few weeks.

Good luck to everyone - it is definitely worth all the agony!

Nicola,

All the best with your new little bundle of joy!
Your story is inspiring, especially the not-too-bad labor part about which I'm terrified! I'm new to the list, as I just got a +ve hcg test after gonal injections.

I think the date will be early january 2005, possibly twins? (had 6 large follicles mature)

Anyway, enjoy the new addition to your family!
