HELP- what to expect my 1st appt!

Post by D&M »

Hi Ladies! I'm new here and I am so happy I found this site, everyone has been so welcoming so far! I am a ittle nervous about my first appointment and what to expect. I've read people talking about calendars and such and I'm wondering if that is a calendar of all your appts and things? AF came on Wednesday Dec 30th and my first appointment is this coming Wednesday. I thought that was a long time to wait buy they say that's fine. i was just curious if someone could give me an idea of what will be happening on that first appt? TIA!

Hi there;

I'm pretty new here too so I don't know if I'll be much help, but I have had my first appointment so I can tell you what we did. I reported my AF on December 21st and did CD3 bloodwork, and started BCP on December 23rd.

I had my first appointment on December 30th. They weighed and measured my height, then did an ultrasound to check my ovaries and uterus. I had an injection teaching session and they went through my calendar at that time, letting me know what to expect.

I also had to put a $500 deposit down and turn in all of our paperwork.

I hope this helps. best of luck to you - hopefully that will be your last period for a while!

DandMe- Good luck on your cycle!!! and Thank you for replying! Im nervous that the office messed up. It will be a whole week by the time my appointment comes. Im not on any medication yet so I'm a little confused about that. I guess they will start everything when I go on Wednesday. I'm going to be so upset if they messed up and I have to wait another month!

I don't know enough about it... the holidays can mess up things for everyone! My Dh had to go to Edmonton, Alberta (6 hours away) for his SA because the labs were all closed during our initial appointment on the 30th.

I do know that I got AF on the 21st and called them the day of. They had a BCP script for me that I started on the 23rd.

I am getting ready to do my first IVF cycle in March. I also thought things would have moved faster by now, but there was a lot of diagnostic work to do first. I don't know if its because I have PCOS but they wanted to do D3BW & ultrasound before anything else. Then I had the saline test to make sure nothing was wrong with my uterus. I had an HSG done to make sure my tubes weren't blocked. I go in tomorrow to see the doc for our official consult to go over final plans/wishes, DH final SA (we did IUIs previously), sign paperwork, etc. They will probably write a script for provera as my AF is late and once that starts D3BW again & u/s (not sure why) then start BCP. I am scheduled to start stims roughly March 14th with ER the week of the 22nd. Don't know if you will have same schedule as everyone can be different depending on hormones, office, insurance requirements. I wish you good luck!

During my first appt with my most recent RE, he thoroughly reviewed my file, discussed our options and statistical chances for success and then reveiwed what we need to do (bloodwork, US, etc.). Then we moved to talk to the financial advisor to discuss payment options. I was not a BCP patient so that was not factored into my schedule but I believe most people start with them.
Above all else, patience is the key. I started with my RE in April and did not complete (have ET) until October. By the time it was over I have completed two ERs and changed meds a couple of times. We even waited one extra month due to high estragen levels.
It was all worth it for us; we gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in June 09 so good luck!!

I suspect they are going to put you on the pill and have AF come again for your cycle. They would need to do a baseline ultrasound within the first days of AF. They will still adjust everything to the right timing. You could be on the pill for only a week or 2 then start your cycle. I started on Lupron before AF even came. So don't worry about waiting for the appointment and missing anything.
At my first appointment they pretty much laid everything out. They did give a calendar with when to take what medication, when to see the RE, when to have ultrasounds and when to stop medication. For my FET, they even had my calendar planned out to the exact day of my FET. They discussed the process of the ER and ET. They taught me how to administer the medications. I had a list of questions and they were very helpful at making sure all of those were answered. Don't worry either if you think of questions later or forget to ask something. I was given the nurses email and was able to ask her many questions even after the appointment. In sure you can always call even if they don;t give you an email.
Good luck to you! :lol:
