help wanted re hair colouring

Post by JULES K »

Hi Girls,

can anyone tell me whether it is safe to colour your hair while pg? I usually use semi permanents to colour my boring brown hair but they don't have any peroxide in. I am now considering using a stronger dye or maybe even having highlights. Does anybody know whether it is safe to do so?

Thanks

It is absolutely fine - there is no evidence to suggest you do any harm - the only thing they say to watch out for is your hair can change and it's receptivity to a colour can too so patch test. I use permanent and have been doing - if you are worried use one of the highlighters as will do the hair and not touch the scalp but don't worry about it - I need to cover the grey from IVF somehow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides all those filmstars and pop stars would not have stopped would they?

I agree. Don't worry, but get your hairdresser to do a patch test first. I dyed my hair twice during pregnancy (although I did ask er to try and keep a couple of mm from my roots).

You gotta look and feel good girl!!!

hair color

Post by ydgg »

I've read that any hairdye that colors the hair has loads of chemicals (ammonia, if not peroxide amongst many others)
Even in non-pregnant women, traces of these chemicals can be found in their organs long after coloring!
I wouldn't risk it. I too have brown hair - a new cut might make it more interesting instead.

Best to do some research,

Yvonne

Sorry but loads of research has been done and there is no proof it harms babies - you could try henna or cold tea for brown hair etc. If you are that worried post on the general board for TRACI - she is a hairdresser and has loads of info on it. By the 3rd trimester the organs etc are developed anyway but even in 1 and 2 they say it is fine and this is universal. Mine does not have peroxide in anyway and if you are too worried like I say just do the hair and close to the roots staying away from the scalp. Don't suppose MAdonna etc stopped - hers are all fine!
Sorry to contradict but if there were defects etc then they would stop us by now.

They do say it's safe to have colours on your hair but they don't recommend perms to be honest. I didn't risk it to be honest when I was pg I just wanted to avoid everything but I think I went abit over board to be honest but I wanted to be safe even though they do say colours are ok.
