Anybody do Single Embryo Transfer?

I'm a first-time IVFer who just had egg retrieval on 1/28. Transfer is scheduled for tomorrow, 1/31, but may get pushed back two days - I won't know until tomorrow. Anyway, I'm leaning towards doing a single embryo transfer unless the egg quality is very poor - twins scare me! Anybody out there been successful with SET, or is anybody else doing it for January/Feb cycles?

From what I hear most people do two and some even go for three! I did two and it failed so I am definitely going for two again this time. I just think it's better odds and yes it does increase the chance of multiples. I would love twins though! Two for One can't beat that lol! I am starting meds Saturday so I will be a few weeks behind you. Good luck in whatever you decide.

If your clinic has good success rates with frozen embryos, then I would definitely go for transferring just one embryo.

Hi jeandawga, I did a single embryo transfer for both my fresh cycles. Unfortunately, it was BFN from my first cycle (day 3 transfer) but happily BFP from the second (blast day 5 transfer). Like you, I'm scared of twins so because we had good quality embryos both times, I was happy to just transfer one. In the UK, you are actually encouraged to just transfer one embryo (and indeed it's compulsory if your IVF is publicly funded and you are under a certain age) because of the increased risk to Mum and babies of having multiples.

I did single transfer on both my cycles. First was BFN but my second was BFP and I am 31 wks now. Both were blasts. As HJW said this is compulsory in the UK for publicly funded cycles.

Thanks for the input! I transferred one good quality embryo today - a day 3 transfer. I was definitely getting pressure from the clinic to go for two, which annoyed me, because I don't feel they were pushing me to go for two b/c of poor embryo quality but more because that is standard for them and helps their success rates. Oh well. I'll see what happens and can always revisit next cycle!

hi jeandawga! I am also a 1st time IVFer. I did my ER on jan 25th and ET on jan 28th. We transferred 2 embryos with ICSI on a 3 day transfer. my husband is deployed so we had to use a frozen specimen and do ICSI. I go for my 1st bloodwork feb 9th. so we are only a couple days apart. I had 20 follicles 13 eggs and 10 fertilized. I dont really know all the lingo but the 10 eggs that were fertilized 8 of them were at 8 stage 1 which I guess are the good ones. We were going to transfer 3 until my dr suggested 2 because of how well they were doing. I wish the best to you and we should keep in touch since we are so close in our cycles together Im actually hoping for twins, but we will be happy with whaT THE GOOD LORD BLESSES us with Best of luck to you.

The policy of my doctor's office is only one embryo if you're 35 years or younger. So, I am stuck with only one. I am the opposite of you; I would love to have two; just in case. I am ok with twins, I have in-laws that live minutes from our house, and my family is very supportive and only a few hours away if I need them. I am hoping to convince my doctor to let me transfer two embryos, but I don't think he'll budge. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm only day 5 of my cycle, so I have awhile to worry about it.

we struggled with this - first time we did 2 blasts and i was 33. BFN. Second time we did 2 blasts at 34 and we had my son Now we are trying again at 35 and really dont want twins but will do 2, even though my clinic always encourages 1, to maximize our chances. Their stats show it doesnt matter but in our case 1 worked and one didnt so who knows. Unfortunately the whole ivf process with stress, needles and meds, pushes you to try more than 1. If you know you cant handle twins, go for the one. Good luck!

Hi there - just want to drop in and say that my DH and I did an elective single transfer and we got pregnant! It was a 5 day blast - Grade 1AA (best). Sadly we miscarried at 8.5 weeks. But eSET does work! Best of luck, Merri

here is one for you.. I transferred 1 embie in my FET cycle in November. My first beta came back at 414...I knew something was fishy...At my 7 week scan, I had 2 sac's! My one frostie split into 2 sac's identical twins. I too was saying "I DON'T WANT TWINS" but here I am at 16 weeks. I knew there is always a risk of an egg splitting but of course, I didn't think it would happen to me. Just food for thought:) Good luck in your decision.

Yup...DH and I transfered one embryo in October of 2008 and on June 27, 2009, welcomed our wonderful baby boy! We got so lucky...it was our first attempt at IVF. Success does happen with one! Good luck!
