hyperthyroidism and IVF??

Post by antoc28 »

Hi, I haven't been had the chance to visit the forum much lately, but still hope you may be able to help me.
To cut a long story short, after my ectopic pregnancy in October 2008 I was told my only chance to conceive was IVF.
I am about to start my first cycle (down-regulation phase to start on April 25th) and found out today that my thyroid has started to play up again (possibly a recidivism of my old Grave's disease). My FT4 levels are 19.2 (should be less than 14.5) and TSH is 0.03 (should be 0.5-5).
So my endocrinologist says I should start being treated with propyltiouracile asap as the thyroid disease could impair my (already rather low :( ) chances of having a successful pregnancy, besides being dangerous for my health.
I called my fertility clinic today and left a message for a doctor to call me back, but they haven't so far done that.
I am afraid they are gong to postpone or even cancel my treatment.
The question I would like to ask is:
Are there any ladies out there who had thyroid problems during or before their IVF treatment?
has anyone being treated with propylthiouracile during their IVF?
I appreciate this may be a very specific and rather narrow topic that may not be of general interest, but if anyone has had a similar experience I would love to hear from you...kind of loosing my sleep over this at the moment.
many thanks for your help,
Antoxxx

Although I have the exact opposite issue (hashimoto hypothyroidism) I DID experience TSH level issues recently. My levels were a 10 and they told me that I was postponed indefinitely until my levels went back to normal. They increased my medication and it went back really quickly to normal. I know it is different, but I lost hope that I would be able to start soon and it was fixable quite quickly! Best of luck!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid about a year after the birth of my DD (IVF) when I had issues getting my period. I assumed it was due to breast feeding and my PCOS but the doc ran tests and found the issue.
For this cycle, I told my RE about the thyroid and I continued on my synthroid dose. Right after my BFP, I had labs drawn to check my levels and continue to to have my levels checked every 6 weeks thus far, maybe more frequently starting soon. I am up to 100mcg daily.
I know this might not exactly answer you question, but with the right RE and the right docs, the meds can control most of the issues.

Hi rikirees,
thanks for your reply. I hope my clinic will be able/willing to manage the issue. Hopefully I'll soon find out.
Congratulations on your twin pregnancy and all the best!
