New girl. 1st IVF consult w/RE June 1st. ?'s!

Post by audraespino »

Thoughts & questions;
Our first appointment/consultation with the RE is on June 1st.

The first day of my last period was April 28th, which means, I am due to start the monthly bleed anytime here in the next week. I read online last night that one woman, started her period a day or two before her first appointment with her RE & called head to let them know. Her being on her period was great timing for her 1st appointment, since they do blood tests & check your FSH levels which has to be done during your monthly cycle (?). So do I call my RE when I start my monthly cycle, since it will be days before my 1st appointment so that they know that they can test for FSH?

Also, I know that you are put on a lot of hormones. To stop & start ovulation etc.
So does that mean that the results from my ovulation calculator & when my fertile days are, are no longer, valid?
Or will they still go by when I ovulate naturally & when my most fertile days are?
Based on the results from the calculator, I am fertile;

July 4th- July 9th, 2010
August 1st- August 6th, 2010
August 29th- Septemeber 3rd, 2010

Im wondering, if my 1st IVF is successful if I will be able to conceive by July 9th
At the latest, August 1st.
I am not really sure how long IVF takes from start to transfer???
So I am just wondering if I will be able to get pregnant on one of my fertile days that are, soon?
(sigh).

Wish someone could anwer the questions I have. I hate to have to wait til the 1st. Patience is not my friend when you are anxious & exciteable as I am sure all you beautiful ladies can understand.

If I do ICSI (I think it is called that when they put the sperm in the egg, instead of letting nature run its course, does it improve my odds of success at all?

I am 26 years old. The boyfriend is 27. We are both in great health.
Don't smoke, drink or use drugs.

I opted, after the birth of my almost now 4 year old daughter for sterilization that is irreversible & to top that off, 2 years ago I lost my right ovary. Hence, my inability to conceive naturally & why I am opting for IVF.

Any advice, suggestions, encouragement, tips, etc that ANY of you with experiences with Ivf can offer will be SO appreciated.

Hi there,

Welcome to this site! It has been so helpful to me in the IVF process. I recommend joining one of the cycle groups when you know what month you are going to cycle (ie July, august), that way you can share the experience with women going through the same thing!

To answer some of your questions:

1) I know they checked my blood work at my first visit and it had nothing to do with my cycle time. It sounds like your infertility is 2/2 your sterilization. It's actually great news you already have a daughter and you're young so you should have good egg quality and you have had success in carrying a baby in the past.

2) Your "fertile days" no longer mean anything for IVF. Depending on your protocol, they will stimulate you to be fertile when they want. For my cycle, i started on birth control pills the first day of my cycle in late March (this is to prevent you from forming cysts on your ovary). Then about two weeks after that i started lupron which prevents you from ovulating (they want to ovulate at an exact time so they get the eggs at egg retrieval). They check you at about 10 days after that to make sure you are suppressed (your estrogen level should be low). Then they start the FSH injections to tell your ovary to make a lot of eggs. Most women take the FSH injections for about 7-10 days. When you have enough follicles of the right size (they monitor this usually by estrogen level and ultrasound), they give you a trigger shot to mature the eggs (I used hcg to trigger). Your egg retrieval is about 35 hours after your trigger. THen depending on when your clinic does the embryo transfer, you will have the embryos that make it placed back into your uterus (my clinic does 5-6d transfers). Then you usually wait about 9 days for a preg test.

The whole process takes about a month and a half to two months to complete a cycle. It does completely consume your life but it is all worth it in the end. THis board is great place for support and questions.

As far as ICSI, the fertilization rates are about the same for IVF and ICSI (about 50%). It's usually indicated for people with failed IVFs in the past, those using genetic diagnosing, or those whose partners have poor sperm count or motility/morphology.

Hope this helps, feel free to private message if you have any questions! Best of luck to you on your IVF journey :)) I got my first ever positive pregnancy test on my first IVF cycle so it can happen :)
